When a team of the ITBP's 53rd battalion was out on an anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] operation, triggered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast in which head constable Anil Ekka sustained injuries. Two US service members were killed in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion in Kandahar province, reports The Khaama Press on January 11. According to a statement published by the Resolute Support in Afghanistan, two US soldiers were killed and two others have been wounded when their vehicle struck an IED in Kandahar province. These service members were conducting operations as part of NATO’s Resolute Support Mission, the statement added. The identities of the slain service members are yet to be ascertained.

The injured personal has been identified as Ramanuj Yadav, of 85th battalion. As per the report, the incident took place when the CRPF personnel were on a road clearance operation. The CRPF Inspector General (IG), G.H.P. Raju said, “Ramanuj had sustained grievous injuries in both his legs and was airlifted to Raipur for treatment.”

The Security Forces (SFs) neutralised a camp of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) after an exchange of fire with Maoists in Rayagada District of Odisha on January 26, reports The Times of India. According to Superintendent of Police (SP), Saravana Vivek M., on receiving a tip-off about the presence of the Maoists at a road construction site in Niyamgiri forest, a joint team of SFs launched a combing operation in the area. On seeing the SFs, the Maoists detonated three Improvised Electronic Devices (IEDs). The SFs escaped the explosion and retaliated leading to a gun-battle and subsequently destroying the Maoist camp. No injuries were reported from both sides in the incident. The SFs seized a huge cache of ammunition and other material from the camp.

Awasthi, on receiving a tip-off about the presence of the Maoists in the said area, a group of over a hundred personnel belonging to District Reserve Guard (DRG), Special Task Force (STF) and Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) unit of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) had launched an anti-Maoist operation. The Maoists, however, triggered Improvised Explosive Device (IED)explosions and opened fire at the SFs leading to an exchange of fire in which 12 DRG and five STF personnel were killed while 15 of them were injured, the DGP added. The Maoists also looted a Light Machine Gun(LMG), 14 assault rifles and an Under-Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL) from the possession of the deceased SFs. Earlier, South Asia Terrorism Portal (SATP) reported that one Maoist was killed and 14 SF personnel were injured while 13 jawans (troopers) of State Police were missing in the encounter. As per the Police Officials, Ranai was an ‘area committee member’, and in-charge of the East Bastar division supply team. She was an active cadre of the East Bastar division since 2007 and was believed to be involved in more than a dozen of Maoist attacks in the Narayanpur area. According to the Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohit Garg, a joint team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) was out on a counter-insurgency operation in the area. When the patrolling team was cordoning off the forest near the said Police camp, the Maoists who had laid an ambush, detonated IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices), and opened fire at the SFs, leading to the gun-battle. “Two security personnel, one belonging to the DRG and the other from the CAF, sustained injuries in the incident,” said the SP adding that after the guns fell silent, the body of a woman Maoist and two rifles were recovered from the spot.

According to a Police official, the incident took place when a DRG team was returning to base after destroying a Maoist transit camp. The Security Forces (SFs) also recovered six IEDs from two separate places in the same operation. “Acting on a tip-off about a Naxal [Left Wing Extremist, LWE] transit camp in the forest near Marjum village, a DRG team launched an operation on the night of July 5. When the team reached the spot, on July 6 morning, Naxals had fled leaving behind three IEDs, each weighing five kilograms.” the official said adding that “later on the way back, they recovered three IEDs, each weighing two kilograms, in Kalepal. In one incident, three Maoists, including two minors, were arrested after an exchange of fire between Security Forces (SFs) and Maoists in a forest near Tetam village under Katekalyan Police Station limits in Dantewada District on August 1. The Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhishek Pallava said, a joint team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and local Police launched an operation based on a specific input that senior Maoists had convened a meeting of people from Tetam, Tela, Jiakorta and other villages in a bid to force them to observe the Martyrs Week (July 28 to August 3) in memory of their slain leaders. When the patrolling team was near Tetam, the Maoists triggered IED (Improvised Explosive Devise) blasts and opened fire on SFs that led to the gun-battle. When the gun fell silent, the SFs arrested Hidma Madvi (23), a ‘jan militia member’ along with a 15-year-old girl and a boy aged 16. Also, detonators, Maoist banners, fire crackers, medicines and items of daily use were recovered from the spot, the SP said adding that “the minor girl was part of the Chetna Natya Mandli (cultural wing of Maoists) while the boy was active as a ‘militia member’. All the three were allegedly tasked with arranging commodities of daily use for senior cadres, spreading Maoist propaganda, damaging roads and conducting reconnaissance on police.” In other incidents, two Maoists, identified as Mahesh Yadav (32) and Manku Modiyam (32) were arrested from separate places in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on August 1. While Yadav was arrested from Tindodi village under Bhairamgarh Police Station limits, Modiyam was arrested from Chilnar village under Bijapur Police Station limits in the District. A Police officer said, Yadav was involved in the killing of Policeman -Somaru Poyam and injuring his parents at their house in Matwada village on July 1. According to details, Muhammad Hayat a student of Karachi University, who was on vacations in his hometown Turbat, was killed by enraged Army personnel after their convoy was targeted with an IED nearby. Hayat was in his date palm field along with family when the Army were targeted with an IED fitted on a motorbike. According to locals, the Army cordoned the area and resorted to aerial firing initially but then bundled many civilians including Muhammad Hayat. Hayat was initially punched and kicked while his sister and mother pleaded for mercy. However, he was then shot multiple times in front of his sister and mother. The explosion took place on Gorna-Mankeli road, where a team of Security Force (SF) personnel along with the BDS of the District Voluntary Force (DVF) was carrying out a demining operation to ensure safety during road construction work. In the operation, the team detected an IED packed in a steel box and planted beneath the dirt track and neutralised it, while another bomb connected to a pressure switch exploded when it was being removed, said an official.

On December 12, an improvised explosive device (IED) blast took place at the residential Krishna colony lane-3 inside the premises of Star Cement at Lumshnong of East Jaintia Hills District in Meghalaya causing injuring to one worker, reports Northeast Now. Two rooms were also partially damaged in the explosion. Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has claimed responsibility for the blast. In its statement, general secretary of HNLC, Saiñkupar Nongtraw, has stated that the blast took place due to non-payment of tax by the owner of the cement factory. Further, HNLC threatened to carry out more blasts in different places. This is the second incident of explosion in Jaiñtia Hills after an explosion at Sookilo.

Acting on inputs about the presence of senior cadres of Darbha division committee of Maoists, SFs had launched a major offensive in the forests of Gogunda, Bedma, Nagaram, Pujaripara, Gumodi and Kakadi on December 23. The DRG trooper was injured in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion triggered by the Maoists while a patrolling team was advancing after the gun-battle at Kakadi village of Dantewada District on December 24. “Personnel belonging to DRG, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), its elite CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) unit were involved in the action that concluded on December 25. During the 72-hour long operation, security forces engaged in gunfights with ultras in Gogunda (Sukma) and Kakadi (Dantewada) on December 24 and 25”, said Inspector General of Police (Bastar range) Sundarraj P. adding that “on both the occasions, ultras escaped from their camps. However, blood stains and drag marks found at encounter sites indicate at least four-five Naxals were shot in each of the encounters.
