Troops advancing towards Kilinochchi captured the key Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) garrison of Paranthan in the morning of January 1 following hours of fighting that killed over 50 militants, according to Colombo Page. Defence authorities said the battle for Paranthan began two days ago when the troop’s armour, artillery and infantry battalions launched a concerted assault on the militants holed up in the strategic town. Troops, supported by the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF), entered Paranthan in the morning of December 31 and reportedly encountered stiff resistance from the LTTE. Troops have also cut-off the vital access routes towards Paranthan along the Jaffna-Kandy (A-9) road from North and South, the military said. Troops are now consolidating defences and advancing further east of the Paranthan junction, security sources said. Defence sources said capture of Paranthan would open up access routes to the remaining LTTE defences at Vaddakkachchi and Puthukkudiyiruppu areas on the Paranthan-Mullaitivu (A-35) road and isolating another LTTE stronghold of Elephant Pass located between the Jaffna peninsula and Kilinochchi.

On January 2, the Sri Lanka Army captured Kilinochchi, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam’s (LTTE) political and administrative headquarters, reports Sri Lanka Army. The troops are reported to have launched simultaneous attacks from three directions in Paranthan, Iranamadu and Adampan before capturing the town in the early hours of January 2. Kilinochchi town, which lies about 334 kilometres (255 miles) north of capital Colombo, remained the LTTE’s most strategic logistic base, from which almost all the decisions were made upon by the exclusive command of the outfit’s leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran and his top-rung leadership. The LTTE kangaroo courts, ‘Police’ Headquarters, ‘Eelam’ banks, luxurious LTTE peace secretariat complex, all operated from Kilinochchi, their de-facto capital of ‘Eelam’ lying on the Jaffna-Kandy (A-9) main supply route. The Defence Ministry in a statement said troops of 57 Division entered the highly defended stronghold from the southern and south-western boundaries while Task Force 1 troops marched in from the north and the northwest, The Hindu reported. The Army had taken the Jaffna-Kandy A-9 highway on the Omanthai-Paranthan stretch. The military had crossed into Kilinochchi District on August 4 and has since been engaged in clashes with the LTTE.

Security Forces on January 5 reached Elephant Pass with the 58 Division troops capturing the entire southern part of it and further advancing towards the North to capture it the entirely, Army Commander Lt. General Sarath Fonseka said, according to Daily News. The troops captured Thamilamadam, the causeway to the south of the Elephant Pass, adds Sri Lanka Army (SLA). “They are in the process of advancing further north to take full control of the Elephant Pass area soon,” a senior military official told Daily News, adding, “With the capture of Elephant Pass South the troops are now in control of the entire Jaffna lagoon. They are in full control of the lagoon front from Pooneryn to Paranthan and Paranthan to Elephant Pass on the A-9 road. They have been left with only the coastal road from Cheminpiyanpattu to Mullaitivu which gets flooded most of the time.” Heavy fighting erupted in the East of Paranthan and Elephant Pass South for the past two days as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) made their maximum effort to stop the advance of the troops towards Elephant Pass and Murusamudai, East of Paranthan. According to military sources, 10 soldiers were killed and 23 others injured in the fierce battle in Elephant Pass and Murusamudai areas.

The troops engaged a fleet of 10 Sea Tiger (sea wing of the LTTE) boats on reinforcement destroying all of them with the militants onboard, according to a Sri Lanka Army (SLA) report. Intercepted LTTE communications confirmed that senior LTTE cadres commanded the battle against troops in which several militants, including a senior Sea Tiger ground commander, were killed. However, Sunday Observer quoted military officials as saying, “More than 20 Tiger boats attempted to land in Chalai under the direct command of Sea Tiger leader Soosai. The attempt was effectively thwarted by the 55 Division troops destroying more than 10 of their boats.” A suicide boat was also destroyed by the ground troops as it came towards the troops operating in the lagoon front. The ground troops foiled more than 15 counter attacks by the LTTE killing more than 20 of their cadres during the battle. Troops also suffered injuries as LTTE launched a massive assault on the ground troops advancing towards south of Chalai. According to military officials the LTTE is heavily resisting the Security Forces (SFs) advancing to the south of Chalai as it would pave the way for the civilians trapped in the No Fire Zone to flee towards the SFs controlled areas.

At least 20 rebels were killed in the clashes." Intercepted LTTE communication confirmed heavy damages to the outfit and the ministry added that senior LTTE leaders, including Soosai and Lawrence, had commanded the attack. The Ministry also said soldiers faced heavy resistance from the LTTE cadres who "seemed to have placed all their heavy artillery and mortar guns in the No Fire Zone (NFZ) demarcated for the civilians". One female cadre of the outfit, in the wake of Army operations, committed suicide by detonating a suicide jacket while others went into hiding, added a Sri Lanka Army report.

There is no evidence that India is supporting violence in Pakistan, the US Special Representative on Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke said on April 24, Daily Times reported. “If the Indians were supporting those miscreants in Pakistan that would be extraordinarily bad, really dangerous, but they are not doing so. There is no evidence that Indians are support miscreants in western parts of Pakistan or in Balochistan,” he said in an interview with a private TV channel. He also said India was the second largest country in the world and one of the most important. “If we are interested in helping Pakistan, we will have to talk to its neighbours, which include China, India and Afghanistan,” he added. He said India had given about $1 billion assistance to Afghanistan, and it should not be a cause of concern for Pakistan. “Pakistan does not need to worry about India in Afghanistan, but it has to be worried about miscreants and militants in its western parts,” he added.

Troops conducting operations in the No Fire Zone (NFZ) in Mullaitivu District captured a 700 meter long Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)-built earth bund built across Rektavaikkal area in the south of Valayarmadam on April 28, reports Colombo Page. Subsequently, the militants drove an explosive laden truck into the troops who retaliated blowing up the vehicle using gunfire, defence sources said. Troops later recovered the dead bodies of seven militants from the area. “Our troops managed to capture this earth bund which was one of the tactically important locations for the LTTE to defend their hideouts in the southern part of the No Fire Zone where LTTE leaders are believed to be hiding through their military tactics and manoeuvres, using small arms,” an unnamed senior military official told Daily News. They also foiled numerous counter attacks which came in the form of explosive laden vehicles, sea borne attacks and armoured tanks to recapture the earth bund which was 10 to 12 feet in height and 700 meters in length defending the southern part of the NFZ. “Our gallant soldiers also averted a major disaster after destroying an explosive laden vehicle which was driven towards the earth bund after it was captured by the troops, firing few rounds of Rocket Propelled Grenades towards the lorry before it reached the earth bund,” the official added. Troops also suffered casualties but managed to avoid a major disaster by destroying the explosive laden vehicle, before it reached the earth bund. The 58th Division troops have reached closer to the junction which links the Puthumanthalam-Mullaitivu road to the Paranthan-Mullaitivu (A-35) road. The 58th Division troops continued their advance towards the southern part of the NFZ in Karaiyamullivaikal and Vellamullivaikkal to rescue an estimated 15000 to 20000 civilians trapped inside the NFZ. The 53rd Division also advanced towards the NFZ from the east of Puthukkudiyiruppu. Security Forces (SFs) since April 20 have rescued more than 112,000 civilians trapped in the NFZ.
