A Sri Lankan court on January 10 sentenced two cadres of the defeated terrorist group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) for bombing of a military aircraft over 18 years ago, reports Colombo Page.North Central Provincial High Court Judge Mahesh Weeramanon January 10 sentenced the two ‘LTTE Missile Brigade’ cadres, RajathuraiJaganaliasKulawan(41) and NallanSivalingamaliasSinnathilakan (43), both residents of Irasathurai in Jaffna, who pled guilty to launching a missile attack on a Sri Lanka Air Force aircraft in 2000 killing 37 people, to 185 years rigorous imprisonment. The court heard that the suspects fired a missile at the Antonov-32 aircraft flying from Palaly to Ratmalana over Anuradhapura (North Central Province) on or near 30thof March 2000 and downed the plane killing 37 people onboard.At the time of the missile attack, members of the Air Force, the Navy and the Police and the Russian pilot were among the 37 people killed.The Judge ordered five years of rigorous imprisonment for each count, a total of 185 years for each suspect to be served in five years.The two LTTE suspects arrested in 2012 in Kilinochchi had revealed that the rebels had fired missiles towards the aircraft from Wilpattu jungles. The Police had recovered parts of the missiles used in the attack.

A Sri Lankan court on January 16 sentenced two members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), who pleaded guilty to their role in the attack on the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) camp in Anuradhapura in Anuradhapura District in North Central Province in 2007, to 10 years rigorous imprisonment, reports Colombo Page. North Central Provincial High court judge Mahesh Weeraman sentenced the two former LTTE cadres Aravindan and Thabo Ruben to 10 years rigorous imprisonment with eligibility for parole after five years. The two LTTE cadres have admitted that they provided the information for the attack on October 22, 2007 on the SLAF camp which destroyed a number of aircraft and killed more than 30 people including 21 rebels. The two suspects, Aravindan and Thabo Ruben had been charged on three counts of providing information to LTTE rebels to carry out the raid on the Air Force base. Aravindan pleaded guilty to the first and second charges while Thabo Ruben admitted guilty to the first and third charges. Each suspect was sentenced to 10 years in prison, five years for each charge.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on January 17 informed the Mount Lavinia Magistrate Court that the same organized group of suspects had carried out both the murder of senior journalist and Sunday Leadereditor Lasantha Wickrematunge and the abduction and assault of The Nation's former deputy editor Keith Noyahr, reports Colombo Page.When the Lasantha Wickrematunge murder inquiry was taken up on January 17, the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the CID's Gang Robbery Unit-Inspector Nishantha Silva making submissions informed the Mount Lavinia Chief Magistrate Mohamed Mihailthat the CID found that the same group of suspects is involved in both crimes. Lasantha Wickrematunge, the founding editor of English weekly, Sunday Leader, was assassinated on January 8, 2009 by four assailants who stopped him on his way to his office on Attidiya-Mount Lavinia road, in a suburb of Sri Lankan capital Colombo.Keith Noyahr, a journalist with The Nation newspaper at the time, abducted by a group of men in a van on the night of the May 22, 2008.

The Mannar Magistrate on March 9 ordered to temporarily halt the excavation work at the Mannar mass grave site in Mannar District of Northern Province after radiocarbon dating determined that the skeletal remains found at the site belonged to pre-colonial era, reports Colombo Page.Excavations at the grave located at the site of the old Sathosa Building in the Mannar town have been carried out for 156 days since its discovery nearly a year ago.Following the discovery of human remains on March 26, 2018 at the old Sathosa building in Mannar, further digging at the site was continued under the supervision of Mannar magistrate M Prabhakaran. The excavation of the site started on May 28, 2018. Skeletal remains of 315 people and human bones have been unearthed from the mass grave. Out of those, skeletal remains of 307 individuals have been systematically removed and currently sealed and placed in a special chamber at the Mannar Magistrate's Court complex. Among the bones found are skeletal remains of 26 children.Radiocarbon dating tests conducted by a laboratory in the US on six representative human bone samples obtained from the mass grave have determined that the remains belong to the period from 1450 - 1719 AD.

The Colombo Crime Division (CCD) on April 11 arrested an underworld member, identified as VidurangaaliasViswa who was involved in an arm deal with a group of former Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) members, reports Colombo Page. According to Police, Viduranga, a resident of Wellampitiyais a member of the KaduwaelaSamayan's underworld gang. The Colombo Crimes Division said that the two underworld leaders, 'Gotha Asanka', who is leading the Samayan's gang from the prison and another underworld leader, 'Ganemulle, Sanjeewa'are engaged in the sale of firearms, which are being unearthed from the North by the former LTTE cadres. Earlier, the Colombo Crime Division arrested a group of former LTTE cadres involved in the arms racket as well as 12 subordinates of 'Gotha Asanka' and 'Ganemulle, Sanjeewa'. The suspects are being detained on detention orders and questioned.During questioning, the suspects have revealed information on several underworld killings committed in Colombo and suburbs using former LTTTE cadres.A plan to assassinate Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian Sumanthiran was also revealed during questioning and some equipment including a claymore bomb that were to be used for the purpose have been found, the CCD said. The finding has been reported to the courts.The Colombo Crimes Division said that Viswa was arrested when it was revealed that he has acted as an intermediary in selling the weapons recovered by the LTTE members.

On November 19, Colombo Magistrate's Court has remanded former Defense Secretary Hemasiri Fernando and suspended IGP Pujith Jayasundara till December 3, reports Colombo Page. The two former top officials were remanded on the charges of criminal negligence and murder due to their failure to prevent Easter bomb attacks despite prior information. The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) had revealed to the court though the two accused had no connections with the Easter attack suspects, yet more investigations were required to review the financial transactions of the duo. After considering the submissions, the magistrate ordered that the suspects be remanded until the 3rd of next month and the CID was ordered to submit a report on the progress of the investigations on that day.

The Colombo High Court Judge Aditya Patabendige issued notice to the respondents of Fernando's bail application, Attorney General, the Acting IGP, the Director of the CID and the OIC in charge of the Commercial Investigation Division of the CID to present facts on December 17. The Swiss Federal Court has acquitted 12 people of terror financing charges while ruling Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to be a non-criminal organization on December 3, reports Colombo Page. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) had charged 12 people of the Swiss Penal Code by raising funds for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE) between 1999 and 2009 and financially supporting the World Tamil Coordinating Committee (WTCC). In June 2018, the Federal Criminal Court had stated that there was not sufficient proof to indict LTTE as a criminal organization. In the present verdict also, the Federal Court upheld the previous ruling that LTTE cannot be regarded as a criminal organization at the time of the fundraising as the group’s primary objective was to be recognized as an independent ethnic community.

The duo has been remanded on charges of criminal negligence and murder for failing to take measures to prevent the Easter Sunday attacks despite having prior knowledge of the attack. Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris, appearing on behalf of the Attorney General informed the Court that the statements of three former IGPs, four DIGs and former Law and Order Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara had been recorded in connection with the investigation. The Court was also informed that Attorney General has instructed the CID to record statements from former President Maithripala Sirisena, former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya and several Ministers and the Archbishop. After hearing the statements, the Court ordered the suspects to be remanded till December 23.
