The High Court on May 20 overturned former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb’s conviction on a terrorism charge raised over an alleged attempt to assassinate former President Abdulla Yameen, reports Maldives Independent. Adeeb was convicted of terrorism and corruption and sentenced to 33 years in the wake of an explosion on the president’s speedboat in September 2015. The decision was based on a Supreme Court order of 2018 on the grounds of political influence over his rushed trial.
