International police organization, INTERPOL is deploying a team to Sri Lanka to assist the national authorities investigating the series of bomb attacks at churches and hotels which left nearly 310 dead and some 500 injured, reports Colombo Page. Checks are already being made against the Organization's Stolen and Lost Travel Documents and nominal databases in order to identify potential investigative leads and international connections, INTERPOL said in a statement on April 22. Deployed at the request of the Sri Lankan authorities, the Incident Response Team (IRT) will include specialists with expertise in crime scene examination, explosives, counter-terrorism, disaster victim identification and analysis.
Meanwhile, the United States (US) warned American citizens traveling to Sri Lanka to exercise increased caution due to possible terrorist attacks following Easter Sunday bomb attacks on churches and five -star hotels in Colombo, reports Colombo Page on April 23. A Level-2 Travel Advisory, issued by the State Department said, "Terrorist groups continue plotting possible attacks in Sri Lanka. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, local government facilities, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, parks, major sporting and cultural events, educational institutions, airports, and other public areas."
