The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) - the ruling party of the Maldives- held its Presidential primary on January 28, 2023, to elect its candidate for the upcoming Presidential elections scheduled on September 9, 2023, reports Avas Online on January 28. The two main leaders of the MDP- Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (the current President of the Republic of Maldives) and Mohamed Nasheed (current Speaker of the Maldivian Parliament and former President) contested for the party’s Presidential ticket.The results of the MDP primary showed that the MDP leader and President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih won the primary with 61 percent of the votes while39 percent voted for Nasheed. This is the first time in the Maldives' history that a sitting President contested a primary seeking re-election.Maldivian media termed the landslide victory of Ibrahim Solih in the Presidential primary election as a “history-changing event for the MDP”.
