A meeting of the Recommendation Committee formed to suggest the names of office-bearers for two crucial Transitional Justice bodies of the Government failed yet again to do so, reports Republica on June 23. The meeting of the committee headed by former Chief Justice Om Prakash Mishra was scheduled for June 23 but it was cancelled in the last hour citing one of its members was unable to attend the meeting. The committee was mandated to recommend the chiefs and members of the two Transitional Justice bodies – Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons (CIEDP) – before mid-April.
Earlier, Conflict Victims’ Common Platform (CVCP) on June 21 wrote a letter to Om Prakash Mishra, who leads the Recommendation Committee to nominate office bearers of TRC and CIEDP, to ensure that professional office bearers are nominated for the two transitional justice mechanisms, reports The Himalayan Times. CVCP stated that it would not accept appointment of the office bearers if TRC Act was not amended as per the decision of the Supreme Court. CVCP added that the two transitional justice mechanisms had remained ineffective due to the government’s failure to amend the TRC Act as per the spirit of the Supreme Court verdict. It stated that the government’s attempt to send party loyalists to the two transitional justice mechanisms was another reason why the TRC and CIEDP had failed to deliver justice.
