The United Nations (UN) issuing a statement on the International Day of the Disappeared, on August 30 expressing solidarity with the families of missing persons in Sri Lanka emphasized that the security and safety of families of victims must be safeguarded, reports Colombo Page. The UN Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka, Hanaa Singer said “The families and friends of the victims experience the slow mental anguish of not knowing the fate of their loved ones. They alternate between hope and despair, wondering and waiting, sometimes for years, for news that may never come. Therefore, it is vital that those who work in aid of seeking redress for victims continue their important work.”
