According to media reports, police on July 3 confirmed that the truckload of ammunition seized in Bangladesh’s Bogra district on June 27 was being smuggled for the All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) terrorists in the Northeastern Indian State of Tripura. The terrorists reportedly intended to send the contraband to the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) area first and had plans to smuggle it further across the border into Tripura. While 62,100 rounds of ammunition of Chinese rifles and 115 kg of high-power explosives were recovered on June 27, the Bogra police also recovered approximately 37,000 more rounds of ammunition and another 60 kilograms of explosives from different places in the same district in subsequent searches. Bangladesh police later arrested, among others, an ATTF terrorist Kishore Debbarma and his two associates, Jogesh Debbarma and Chitta Debbarma, from the Teliapara area of Habiganj district in this connection and also recovered an AK-47 rifle and a wireless set from Jogesh Debbarma’s residence.

According to a media report of July 16, two Islamist groups– the Jihadi Party and the Hizbut Tauhid - have intensified their activities in the southwestern zone. Police have also arrested 14 activists of these groups, including a minor from Jhenidah, on an unspecified date. According to the police, they are suspected to have links with the underworld criminal gangs. Further, the police have also seized leaflets of these groups. While the Jihadi Party declares that economic salvation of the distressed people through an armed struggle, among other things, is its objective, the Hizbut Tauhid, on the other hand, has indicated that it opposes the Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and has also declared the police to be its enemy. The police also suspect that Hizbut Tauhid may be involved in smuggling of arms and explosives into the country and may also be attempting to incite religious fanaticism among the populace.

According to reports of July 16, after the recent arms recovery in Bandarban, intelligence agencies are investigating if the hill district is being used as a new route for smuggling of illicit arms. An M-16 rifle, an AK-47 rifle, 124 rounds of bullet and a foreign-made wireless set was recovered from the area in the first week of July. According to official sources, total recoveries since July 2002 from the area include an M-16 rifle, three AK-47 rifles, 18 SBBL, four.22 bore rifles, another rifle, three revolvers, five pistols, 124 rounds of ammunition and a powerful mine explosive. It is believed that the arms are carried form the Myanmar side of the border through the hilly routes of border subdivisions -- Naikkhangchhari, Alikadam and Thanchi -- to Bandarban town. The arms are then sold to local traders. Involvement of Myanmar groups, including Arakan Army, Democratic Party of Arakan and National United Party of Arakan are also suspected in the illicit arms trade.

The drive involving 14,000-strong personnel from the police, Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) and ansars was launched on July 20 in the wake of a series of violence in the region.
