Dhaka University (DU)’s Shamsunnahar hall authorities arrested three DU students on November 3 for their alleged involvement with Islami Chhatri Shangstha, the female wing of ICS and Hizb ut-Tahrir. They were identified as Umme Kulsum Koli, a 3rd year student of World Religions and Culture Department; Fahmida Akter, 4th year student of English Department; and Mimona Akter, 1st year student of Mass Communication and Journalism Department of the University. Many books related with Islami Chhatri Shangshta and Hizb ut-Tahrir were also recovered from them. The detained students confessed that they were involved with these organizations.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel have been deployed in Dhaka city as well as different parts of the country on November 4 ahead of the 48-hour countrywide hartal (shutdown) called by Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) from 6am on November 5 till 6am on November 6, reports Dhaka Tribune. In a statement on November 3, JeI acting ameer (chief) Makbul Ahmed and acting secretary general Dr Shafiqur Rahman said they would enforce a 48-hour shutdown from 6am on November 5 till 6am on November 6. The BGB personnel started patrolling different strategic points of Dhaka city alongside members of other law enforcement agencies.

The Detective Branch (DB) of Police arrested a top commander of Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami Bangladesh (HuJI-B) following a raid at Sayedabad area in Dhaka city on November 4, reports The Independent. The arrested was identified as Khairul Bashar (30) alias Ibrahim, the acting operation commander of the banned Islamist outfit. Joint Commissioner DB Monirul Islam said, “Ibrahim had received militant training under the supervision of the Pakistan-based outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) for two years and recently returned to the country with the objective to establish militancy training camps in remote areas. As per the information provided by him, a total of 12 more persons were trained in three phases in the last two years in Pakistan.”

After arrest of the pages' administrator the DB said, “As internet has been one of the main tools of communication, ABT is spreading the doctrine of jihad (holy war) through 117 web pages including on Facebook, Twitter, and blogs. The group is disseminating not only militant ideology by uploading provocative contents but also running anti-state and anti-Government propaganda on the platforms.”

Pankaj Bhattacharya, President of National Awami Party, addressing a programme in front of the National Museum in Dhaka city on November 6 said, “In order to root out militancy in the country, the Government must take over the businesses controlled by Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI)”, reports The Daily Star. He further said that there were 125 businesses, which had strengthened the economic base of JeI and facilitated the party to "spread militancy". Turning to the war crimes trial, Pankaj said Khaleda Zia and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) were confused, and they should clarify whether they were on the side of freedom fighters or against them.

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on November 6 arrested Maulana Abu Bakar Siddique alias Hafez Selim Hawlader (35), a top leader of Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami Bangladesh (HuJI-B) from Keraniganj in Dhaka city, reports The Daily Star. Siddique is a fugitive death row convict in Ramna Batamul carnage case during the Pahela Baishakh celebrations that killed 10 people in 2001 and also an accused in the August 21 grenade attack case that killed 24 people and injured scores in 2004.A Dhaka court in June handed the death penalty to eight HuJI-B operatives, including Siddique and life term imprisonment to six others in the Ramna Batamul carnage case.
