Laimayum Surjakanta Sharma was arrested after an identity card issued by him for a Doordarshan production was found from the Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) leader R.K. According to Sangai Express, 28-year old Yumnam Lalit, the son of Y. Neta, a Rural Development Director, was abducted by two Kangleipak Communist Party- Military Council (KCP-MC) militants at gunpoint from his Chingamathak Yumnam Leikai residence in the Imphal West District in the morning of July 2. However, Lalit is reported to have later reached home safely at about 2.30 pm (IST). A Police source said there has been a demand of INR one million from the KCP (MC) outfit to the Rural Development Department earlier. Neta’s residence was also attacked with gun shots on two occasions some days back.

Security Forces (SFs) arrested two militants of the Azad faction of the People’s United Liberation Front (PULF) in two separate incidents, reports Imphal Free Press. In the first incident, Mohammad Alimuddin alias Shaolin (22) was arrested from KR Lane in the Imphal East District. During interrogation, Alimuddin confessed that he joined the outfit in August 2008 through Mazida Bibi of Golapati and was working under the command of ‘Finance Secretary’ Mohammad Janir of Keirao Manjor Engkhol. Meanwhile, another cadre of the outfit was arrested on the same day around 9.45 am (IST) from Keirao Sabal Leikai. The arrested militant, identified as Mohammad Farijuddin alias Iboinu (19), confessed that he joined the outfit in August 2008 through Janir and was trained at Khokhoi in the State of Nagaland.

Two militants were killed during a gun-battle with the SFs in the Tengnoupal area of Chandel District, official sources said. One AK 47 rifle, one carbine, a grenade and some rounds of ammunition were recovered from the incident site, they said, adding that some militants escaped during the exchange of fire.

A combined team of Thoubal District Police and personnel of the Assam Rifles shot dead a United National Liberation Front (UNLF) militant in an isolated area between Thoubal Wangmataba and Kabrang village under Thoubal Police Station of Thoubal District around 4.45 am (IST) in the morning of July 5, according to Imphal Free Press. However, two other militants managed to escape through the hilly terrain and thick forest. One foreign made pistol, one magazine containing three live rounds of 7.62mm, one Chinese hand grenade and one receipt book written as UNLF Nungaiba Phongdokchaba having 30 pages were recovered from the possession of the slain militant. The slain cadre was later identified as Khoirom Ratankumar (30) of Moidangpok Awang Leikai village.

On July 6, a team of the Imphal East District Police arrested two United Peoples' Party of Kangleipak (UPPK) militants, identified as Amakcham Bijen alias Kak (20) and Sapam Roshan (18), from Kongba Khunou area of Imphal East District at about 4.30 am (IST). Telegraph quoting the Chief Minister of Manipur, Okram Ibobi Singh, reports that extortion was the motive behind the abduction and murder of the Manipur Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Thingnam Kishan and his two junior staff members by the militants of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland - Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) on February 14, 2009. The Chief Minister informed the Legislative Assembly that preliminary investigations had ascertained the motive of the crime as extortion. "The NSCN (IM) cadres demanded money from the SDO and two of his staffs and were killed for not paying it. We do not know how much money was demanded," he said. The NSCN-IM militants abducted Kishan, who was posted at Kasom Khullen in Ukhrul District, along with five of his subordinate staff members on February 14 from the District. While the abductors freed three men belonging to the Naga community, they killed Kishan, Yumnam Token Singh and Aribam Rajen Sharma. The mutilated bodies were recovered in Senapati District on February 17. Subsequently, the NSCN-IM admitted the involvement of its cadres and said ‘Lieutenant Colonel’ Hopeson Ningshen was the mastermind. The Central Bureau of Investigation arrested Ningshen on May 28 and he is currently imprisoned in Tihar Jail in the national capital New Delhi

A statement issued by the outfit’s ‘information and public relations officer’ Puranthaba accused the Hotel proprietor of ignoring repeated appeals for assistance and instead conniving with Security Forces. In case the hotel owner continues to defy the KCP organisation more stern action could not be ruled out, Puranthaba added. Regarding the attack of Shanti Hospital, Puranthaba alleged that it was carried out as the private medical centre had been violating norms ‘prescribed’ by the KCP.

A suspected militant belonging to the Military Council faction of the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) was lynched by an enraged mob at Lilong Mairen Makhong Makha Leikai in the Thoubal District on July 26, reports Imphal Free Press. While a live round of the 9-mm pistol and a mobile number were recovered from the possession of the slain militant, two other militants managed to escape from the incident site. The three militants were attacked by the mob when they were trying to take a bus forcibly towards the residence of its owner, identified as Mohammed Ayub Khan. They came to handover the live round of 9-mm pistol and the mobile number at his residence. Ayub Khan said that the incident might have been a reaction of the faction since it had served a monetary demand a few months back.
