The Inspector General (IG) of Balochistan Frontier Corps (FC), Major General Obaidullah Khattak, stressed the need for clearing the provincial capital of illicit weapons and registering Afghan refugees and unregistered vehicles. He said the FC could launch a campaign against illegal weapons if ordered to do so. He said efforts to secure peace in Balochistan would suffer a setback if the FC was withdrawn. The Government, Khan said, would have to take effective measures to clear the city of illegal weapons and register Afghan refugees and vehicles on which no customs duty had been paid for the sake of peace. “Anti-peace elements are involved in creating a law and order situation in Balochistan to damage the interests of the country,” he said, adding that it was the FC which could maintain peace in the province.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, on October 11 said that the prosperity of Balochistan was linked to peace, and asked the militants to shun violence and work for the progress of Pakistan, reports Daily Times. “Choose the path of peace, as this is the only way for the progress of people of Balochistan and Pakistan,” the Prime Minister said while addressing the passing out parade of the recruits of the Pakistan Army belonging to Balochistan. “The agenda of terrorists and extremists is certainly against Pakistan,” Gilani said and urged them to shun this path. Gilani said that the Government wanted reconciliation and was still ready to hold talks with dissident Baloch brethren to find out an amicable solution to the issues of Balochistan. The statement was made during the passing out parade of Pakistan Army that inducted 6000 Baloch recruits after the completion of their training. While addressing the passing out parade of the new recruits, Gilani said that the induction of the Baloch youth should not be perceived as just providing jobs to the youths of Balochistan but also strengthening of the defence capabilities of the armed forces.
