Talks between TTP chief Baitullah Mehsud and the Government have reportedly been suspended and the former is of the view that the US pressure has forced the authorities to go slow on finalising the proposed peace accord, according to The News. "We are still in contact with each other, but signing of the peace agreement may take some time as the government is under tremendous pressure from Americans and other Western powers," said a senior Taliban commander and close aide of Baitullah Mehsud.

A missile was fired at a house next to a mosque at village Sapalga in North Waziristan on June 2, almost completely destroying the building, The News reported. However, no loss of life or injuries was reported. Residents of the village, south of Miranshah, headquarters of North Waziristan, said they found fragments of metal from a missile believed to have been fired by a US drone aircraft in the middle of the night. "It happened at 12:30am. It was a US pilot-less plane that fired a missile while flying very low," Niamatullah Khan, a tribal elder told Reuters. Khan said the house had been empty and no one had been killed or wounded. Villagers said drones had been flying over the area for the past two days.

Bomb blasts destroyed two dozen business establishments, including around eight music shops in Purani Ghari Mandi in Miranshah, headquarters of North Waziristan, according to Daily Times. The attack came overnight, at the end of a one-week deadline issued by militants in the town near the Afghan border for shopkeepers to close outlets showing still and moving images, or selling music. “We received a letter one week ago from the Taliban that we must close down our business and not sell any music, videos or photos… Now they have carried out their threat and left us without our business,” shop owner Inayatullah Khan told AFP. No one was hurt in the attack.

Two militants affiliated with ‘commander’ Maulana Faqir Mohammad were killed and two others sustained injuries when troops of the paramilitary Frontier Corps (FC) allegedly fired at them near Nawagai in the Bajaur Agency of FATA on June 4-afternoon, The News reported. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), led by Baitullah Mehsud, threatened to avenge the killing of their cadres. The two slain militants were identified as Ziaur Rahman and Nauman, while the two others who sustained injuries were identified as Daud and Parvez Khan. TTP spokesman Maulana Omar claimed the four militants were en route to Kamar Nagra area near Nawagai where, they had convened an important meeting of militants to review the deteriorating law and order situation in the town. "As we had mentioned earlier, some people in the government for their vested interests wanted bloodshed and violence to continue in the tribal regions and today's incident was an ample example of their anti-peace conspiracy," said the TTP spokesman.

Any future terror attack against US interests would most likely be carried out by militants based in Pakistan’s restive tribal belt bordering Afghanistan, US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Michael Mullen said on June 10, according to Daily Times. The top military official told a press in Washington that tribal groups with ties to al Qaeda in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) represent the worst security threat to the US. "I believe fundamentally that if the US is going to get hit, it is going to come out of the planning of the leadership in FATA," he told reporters, adding, "That is a threat to us that must be dealt with." The new government, Mullen said, faces "significant challenges as it gets underway, and at the same time is looking to the best way to deal with this challenge".

Soldiers backed by armoured vehicles retook control of Bara town in the Khyber Agency of the FATA on June 29, and prepared to advance to other areas in the district, including the Tirah Valley, Daily Times reported. An unnamed official said that the Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) chief Mangal Bagh had moved to the remote Tirah Valley before the launch of the military operations, Reuters reported. The second day of the NWFP Government’s operations ended without any resistance, as the paramilitary Frontier Corps (FC) troops continued their advance into the tribal region near Peshawar, capital of the NWFP. In Bara, Bagh had directed his supporters against fighting Government forces. “We’re peaceful and giving way to the security forces; we are not going to fight,” said Mangal Bagh’s 16-year-old son Tayeb. The 5,000-troop contingent of FC soldiers that launched the operation on June 28 was supplemented with a fresh deployment of 400 troops and 20 vehicles on June 29.

More contingents of the Frontier Corps on June 30 arrived in Bara and were deployed in the Shalobar, Qambarkhel and other areas. Bazaars and public places in Bara, located 15 kilometers from the provincial capital Peshawar, remained open as normalcy was reportedly returning to the area after two days of curfew.
