Daily Times reports a suspected US drone was seen flying at low altitude over several areas of North Waziristan Agency in the FATA, spreading panic among the people. Locals said drones that fly low usually fire missiles. But, the white-coloured spy plane did not fire. Speaking at an emergency news conference following drone flights in the area, local elders asked the government to stop US attacks in the agency. They said the violation of Pakistani airspace by US spy planes was a threat to the country’s security. The elders asked the government to take practical steps instead of lodging protests with the US. The elders said if the attacks were not stopped, the tribesmen would join the Taliban to fight against US and NATO forces in Afghanistan. They asked the government to ensure the joint resolution passed after an in-camera briefing to parliamentarians is implemented.

Tension gripped Mohmand Agency on November 5 after tribesmen interpreted an appeal by the government to expel militants and vacate houses as an indication of an impending military action. An exodus started from Anbar subdivision and people headed towards Peshawar, Mardan and other areas. The authorities dropped pamphlets from planes in parts of the area adjacent to Peshawar on November 4, seeking local people’s support against pro-Taliban militants. "The government has banned the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and its leadership has been declared proclaimed offender. Its leaders are receiving funds, weapons and other incentives from non-Muslims and anti-Pakistan states for their activities," the pamphlet said. "They are not Mujahideen and they spread militancy. They are involved in killing innocent people." It urged the tribesmen to follow the example of their kindred in Bajaur, Darra Adamkhel and Orakzai and raise a lashkar (militia) against militants. Sources said militants had established their hold in three of the five subdivisions of Mohmand — Lakaro, Pendiali and Anbar. They had also set up parallel courts in the areas. A curfew has been in place in the region for the past 10 days. All government offices and educational institutions have been closed. The main road between Mohmand and Bajaur has been closed, causing shortage of food in several areas. Local people complained that hospitals were facing a shortage of doctors and paramedics and patients could not be taken to Peshawar because the road had been blocked.

22 tribesmen were killed and 45 others injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up at a Salarzai jirga (council) in the Bajaur Agency of FATA on November 6, according to Daily Times. The blast targeted a lashkar (volunteer militia) in the Batmalani, about 40-kilometres northeast of agency headquarters Khar. “Two to three hundred members of the lashkar were finalising their strategy after demolishing houses of Taliban when the blast occurred,” said local police official Fazal-e-Rabi. Malik Rahimullah, a tribal elder, said the explosion occurred as soon as armed contingents began to move. Among the dead were lashkar head Malak Fazal Karim and his aides Malak Wazir Khan and Malak Sakhi. Officials initially said it appeared that a remote-controlled bomb was used, but later said body parts of an apparent suicide bomber were found, and that witnesses said they saw a young man rushing into the crowd.

Daily Times reports that Pakistani security forces on November 10 retrieved 15 trucks that had been hijacked by the Taliban earlier in the day en route to Afghanistan to deliver goods to US-led coalition forces, AFP quoted an official as saying. Sources said that 13 of the trucks contained wheat and two were carrying military vehicles. The trucks were seized at four places along a road leading to the Afghan border at Jamrud in the Khyber Agency of FATA. “About 60 masked gunmen popped up on the road and took away the trucks. Not a single shot was fired,” Reuters quoted another official as saying. A military offensive followed the hijacking, with two gunship helicopters targeting Godar, Saurkamar and Varmado Mela areas of Jamrud. AFP reported that at least two Taliban fighters were killed in the operation. “We have successfully recovered all the trucks ... two militants were killed and five wounded in the operation,” the agency quoted official Rahat Khan as saying. But doctors told Daily Times that those killed in the operation were civilians – including a 12-year-old boy. They said that six civilians had also been injured, and most of them were children.
