Suspected Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants in Afghanistan abducted as many as 40 Pakistani boys after they inadvertently strayed across the border, Daily Times reported on September 2. The boys, from the town of Mamoond in Bajaur Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), were trekking when they ended up in Afghanistan on August 31. “Now, they are being held by militants across the border,” Pakistan Government official Muhammad Haseeb Khan said. Two local intelligence officials said that the abductors were apparently from Maulvi Faqir Muhammad group of TTP, who is active in Bajaur but is believed to have fled to Afghanistan in 2010. Security officials said about 20 boys below ten years old in the group were allowed to return to Pakistan, but boys between 12 to 14 years old were held. About 60 children took part in the outing. Tribal elders and clerics were trying to negotiate with the militants to secure their release, officials said.

The volunteers of various peace bodies in Peshawar and tribal and semi-tribal regions of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on September 3 decided to extend cooperation to each other in their fight against Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), reports Dawn. Sources said that a meeting of the heads of various peace bodies was held at Bazid Khel of Peshawar wherein different issues were discussed. The meeting was also attended by Haji Gul Meran of Madali Chowk, Lal Pur Gul and Javed of Dura Adda of Akakhel and Bazid Khel Qaumi Lashkar chief Fahimur Rehman. The participants of the meeting expressed concern over shortage of arms and ammunitions, saying Government should extend support to them otherwise they would not be in a position to afford the expenditures of the fight against militants. They said that Government had promised to raise community police for support of peace bodies but all the appointments in the force were made on basis of political affiliations. Those Policemen only worked as bodyguards of political figures, they alleged.

Fierce clashes between two factions of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) rattled the Talo Kanj, Badsha Kot and Shabak areas of Kurram Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on September 9, reports Dawn. The fighting involved militants loyal to TTP chief Hakeemullah and TTP Kurram chapter Chief Fazal Seed. The latter had parted ways with the TTP and formed his own group, Tehreek-e-Taliban Islami Pakistan (TTIP), on June 27. The rift between the two groups reached peak after Hakeemullah’s men set up checkposts in Talo Kanj, Badsha Kot and Shabak areas. They then started collecting “taxes”. The Fazal Saeed group resisted the move and his supporters attacked the checkposts and tents of Hakeemullah’s men. Both sides used heavy weapons as fighting continued till late into the night. The report about causalities is yet to come.

Pakistan's border region remains the most dangerous place in the world and Federally Administered Tribal Areas remains epicentre of the world's worst of global jihad, said Michael Vickers, the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence said, reports Times of India. "Pakistan's FATA remain the epicentre - the "Star Wars Bar," if you will - of the world's worst of global jihad," said Michael Vickers. "The continued presence of groups, like TTP (Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan), the Haqqani Network, and the Commander Nazir Group who provide al Qaida with safe haven and make common cause with it ensures that the FATA will almost certainly remain a principal area of US counterterrorism focus well after core al-Qaida is dismantled and ejected from the region," Vickers said at a conference at the National Defense University.
