The Chief of the Army Staff (CoAS), General Raheel Sharif while addressing on the occasion of his visit to the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) headquarters Rawalpindi District of Punjab on August 3 said that the nexus between drug- pushers and terrorists would be eliminated at all costs as drug peddlers and those involved in drugs production were as much pernicious to the national security as the terrorists, reports The News. “Drug money is being used for abetting terrorism and, therefore, it is important that drug dealers are dealt with an iron hand,” Sharif emphasised, adding, “We will break the nexus among drug dealers, financiers and perpetrators of terrorism. We will not allow these drug barons to negatively influence and spoil our future generations."

Federal Minister of Interior Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on August 9 said in an official report on the implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP) against terrorism and extremism that Law-Enforcement Agencies have so far placed 30 religious seminaries in the "suspect" category which have been closed, reports Dawn. Two of the suspect seminaries were from Punjab, 15 from Sindh and 13 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. No seminary in Balochistan has been placed in this category since the launch of the NAP in December 2014. Although the report does not explain in so many words what is meant by suspected madaris, a senior official involved in the implementation of the NAP said that suspect seminaries are the ones that have some direct or indirect connections with militants or their activities. According to the report, Sindh is the only Province which has taken concrete action and has so far closed 72 unregistered seminaries. No such action has been reported from the other three Provinces.

Lahore High Court (LHC) issued a notice to the Federal Government on August 10 on a petition filed by Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) founder and Jama'at-ud-Dawa (JuD) 'chief' Hafiz Muhammad Saeed against the screening of an Indian movie, Phantom, in Pakistan, reports The Express Tribune. He said the film targeted the JuD and sought to harm the integrity of Pakistan. Justice Shahid Bilal Hasan directed the Federal Government to file its reply before the next hearing on August 13, 2015. Advocate AK Dogar, the counsel for Saeed, requested the court to issue a stay order against the screening but the judge said it was necessary to first hear the respondent. A JuD 'spokesperson' and Saeed’s brother-in-law, Hafiz Abdul Rehman Makki, attended the court proceedings. Responding to a query after the proceedings, Makki said they wanted the film to be banned on every forum, including the internet, cinemas and DVDs.

Two suicide attackers on August 16 killed Punjab Home Minister Colonel (retd) Shuja Khanzada and at least 20 other people, after detonating a bomb at a meeting the Minister was attending in the village of Shadi Khan in Attock District of Punjab, reports The News. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Hazara Circle Shaukat Shah was also killed in the incident. 23 others persons were also injured. Khanzada (71) had been holding a meeting with local people who had come to express their condolences on the death of his cousin. “There were two suicide bombers. One stood outside the boundary wall and the second one went inside and stood in front of the minister,” Mushtaq Sukhera, Provincial Police Chief said. “The blast by the bomber standing outside destroyed the wall which caused the roof to fall on the minister and the people gathered there,” he added. Khanzada used to visit his home every week to listen to the problems of the people of his constituency. Khanzada had been a member of the Punjab Assembly since 2002 and an active member of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). Meanwhile, a Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP)-affiliated militant group, Lashkar-e-Islam, (LI) claimed responsibility for the attack and said it was retaliation for military operations against them in Khyber Agency. However it was unclear if LI had actually carried out the attack or was just taking credit for it.
