Two United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militants, Kongkon Gogoi alias Kamal Gogoi and Surajit Gohain alias Yugantar Phukon, were killed in an encounter with security force personnel at Chirang Gaon under Bordubi police station in the Tinsukia district on January 2, reports Sentinel. While another unidentified cadre managed to escape, INR 67,000 in cash, a 9 mm pistol, a cell phone and other incriminating documents were recovered from the possession of the slain cadres.

At least 19 persons were killed and 25 others wounded, when explosions were triggered targeting migrant workers in six separate locations in the eastern districts of Dibrugarh and Tinsukia on January 5, reports Times of India. Sibsagar district was also part of the area where explosion caused civilian casualty, according to Assam Tribune. Assam Police suspected involvement of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA). The report added that heavily armed ULFA militants attacked two brick kilns, fired indiscriminately on shops and business centres, besides triggering an explosion near a tea garden. "In all the incidents, the ULFA targeted people, most of them daily wage earners and petty traders," a senior police official said. "The death toll could mount as we have reports of some more people injured in remote areas," said Tinsukia district magistrate Absar Hazarika.
