Assam Tribune quoting Assam Police reports that in the year 2007, 286 civilians, 24 security force (SF) personnel and 129 militants were killed in 500 incidents of violence. While 750 civilians were injured in different militancy-related incidents, SF personnel arrested 1627 militants belonging to various outfits in the State. Police sources further said that the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) was the worst hit as a number of hardcore cadres of the outfit were either arrested or killed during the year. 75 civilians were abducted by the militant groups in 2007 and 55 of them were rescued.

An Assamese poet, Santanu Sarma, was arrested at Malikuchi in Nalbari town on January 7-night on charges of writing seditious material for the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and mobilising opinion against counter-insurgency operations, reports Telegraph. He was reportedly writing and editing material for the ULFA’S mouthpiece, Freedom. The Additional Superintendent of Police (city) Debojit Deori said Sarma was on the "wanted" list since October 2004, when an arrested ULFA conduit, Anil Mazumdar, named him as the lynchpin of the outfit’s network in the city. He said, "We arrested him on the basis of a confessional statement by Mazumdar, who was very close to him. Sarma has denied having any links with Ulfa and is being interrogated by senior police officials."

The surrendered ULFA cadres were identified as Bhaimon Changmai alias Nabin Dutta and Bina Payeng alias Rimi Bora. They also deposited a 9 mm pistol along with magazines and six live rounds of ammunition. Both militants were from the ULFA’s 28th battalion and handled communication between the outfit’s leaders and grassroots-level cadres.

Security forces killed a United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militant belonging to the Charlie Company of the 28th battalion in an encounter at Ahukhat village under Makum police station in the Tinsukia district in January 10, Telegraph reports. The militant was identified as Corporal Puwali Dowerah alias Hiren Dowerah, a resident of Hatijan. Three other cadres, however, managed to escape. The security forces also recovered one .32 pistol, one magazine with two live rounds and three bicycles at the site of the encounter.

The reports also revealed that the shipment included highly-sophisticated remote control devices like those used by the Islamist militants to carry out the blasts at Hyderabad and Ajmer Sharif in 2007. These devices will enable ULFA to carry out explosions through signals from mobile handsets.
