Arrested Indian Mujahideen (IM) operative Yasin Bhatkal made a call to his wife from Hyderabad jail saying he would be out soon with help from Damascus, triggering fears about the jailed jihadi getting help from Islamic State (IS), Times of India reports on July 4. In the five-minute-long chat, according to the intercepts, Bhatkal is heard telling his wife Zahida, "Damascus se log madad kar rahe hain. Mai jald hi riha ho jaoonga. [Pople from Damascus are helping. I will be free soon].” Agencies suspect IS could help Bhatkal by enlisting the support of Ansar-ul-Tawhid Fi Bilad Al Hind (AuT).

Azamgarh (District) in Uttar Pradesh is on the radar of the Central intelligence agencies once again, dnaindia.com reports on July 8. The trigger is the news of Mohammad Sajid alias 'Bada Sajid', who was on the 'most wanted' list of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), being killed in Syria while fighting for the Islamic State (IS) there. After the latest development, the intelligence agencies are learnt to have quickened their search for seven other suspected hardcore terrorists on NIA’s 'most wanted', all hailing from Azamgarh, four of whom carry a reward of INR 10,00,000.“We are definitely in touch with Central agencies to find out more about Sajid’s death in Syria,” says Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) IG Ram Kumar. Efforts are on to find who all he was in touch with, he adds. However, he says the ATS is looking at the entire state to ascertain these contacts and not only Azamgarh. Sources say surveillance on a large number of telephones and mobiles of Azamgarh has already been started and efforts are on to find out who all have been in contact with people in Syria and Iraq since the IS started its campaign to usurp power.Sajid had masterminded the serial blasts in Delhi, Jaipur and Ahmedabad in 2008. NIA had declared a reward of INR 10,00,000 for information on Sajid’s whereabouts. His younger brother Chhota Sajid had been killed along with another youth in a police encounter in the well-known Batla House encounter in Delhi on September 19, 2008. Two suspected Indian Mujahideen (IM) operatives, Mohammad Saif and Zeeshan were arrested while a fourth accused Ariz Khan had escaped. All these, suspected to be IM operatives, were from Azamgarh. For a long time after the Batla encounter, Azamgarh had virtually become a political battlefield.

Social media accounts linked to known supporters of the Islamic State (IS) on July 20 posted images of two boats carrying armed IS fighters from the latest IS nasheed video — a video with English subtitles accompanied by a chant released by its media wing, Al Hayat Media, claiming that it showed “a boatful of Indians”, reports Indian Express. They claimed that one of the men was Abu Turab al Hindi, Indian Mujahideen (IM) 'commander' Muhammad “Bada” Sajid who was killed in Syria. The accounts also posted a separate image from the latest nasheed video of a purported Indian in the ranks of the IS, identifying him as Abu Qaqa al Hindi.“Do any one recognized anything? The latest Hayat media nasheed have a boatful of Indians,” tweeted @cihadci2 at 12:27 pm on July 20. This was accompanied by an image from the video of about a dozen IS fighters carrying assault rifles and an IS flag on two adjacent boats out on sea. “They sold themselves and their belongings to their master,” says the English subtitle. The account is believed to be operated by Fahad Shaikh, one of the four youths from Thane (Maharashtra) who reportedly joined the IS in May last year. “May this boat doesn’t stop until it conquer whole of India from Mushrikeen. And we invite you to keep filling it,” said another tweet. Pro-IS accounts also tweeted a still from the video of an IS fighter with his finger raised, identifying him as a “Mujahid from India”. “Abu qaqa al hindi, a Mujahid from India,” tweted @cihadci2. Fahad was earlier believed to be operating the account @magnetgas which was suspended on 21 occasions, only to resurface with a serial number suffixed to @magnetgas. He later shifted briefly to the handles @pneumatic11, @tungsten9 and @helium61 which were also suspended. Since then, he has used several variations of the handle @cihadci which have also been suspended.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (UMHA), after seeking a report from ten (10) States, has decided to formulate a ‘coherent national strategy’ on the Islamic State (IS), The Hindu reports on July 21. The Centre has woken up to the threat posed by the terror outfit, IS, to India as it seeks to expand its global footprint and enroll fighters from all over the world. The States that sent their reports to the Centre are Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Assam and Tamil Nadu. A senior government official said there was a high probability that Indian intelligence agencies were not aware of the true dimension of the IS and it was being underplayed. “IS is expanding its global base and it is high time that India took it seriously,” he said.

All the 39 Indians held hostage in Mosul town of Iraq by Islamic State (IS) militants over a year ago were "safe", government said on July 22 quoting multiple third party sources and asserted that efforts were on to secure their release, reports The Times of India. The Indian nationals were taken hostage by the ISIS on June 11 last year in northern Iraq's Mosul town. Union Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh said government was in "close and regular" contact with relevant Iraqi government authorities to obtain information on their whereabouts and safety."As per latest information from multiple third party sources, they are all safe. The government is making all efforts and taking all steps to secure their release," Singh said, replying to a question in Lok Sabha (Lower House of Indian Parliament). Replying to a separate question, Singh said, "as per information received from Indian Embassy in Baghdad, 39 Indians are held under the captivity of Islamic state of Mosul." He said a group of senior officials are stationed in Erbil in Kurdistan Autonomous Regions of Iraq to liason with government authorities and individuals to secure release of the Indians.Singh said external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj had personally spoken to her counterparts in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) as well as other friendly countries in the region to assist in locating the Indian nationals.

Even as Islamic State's (IS) activities in Turkey are increasing, there is a serious threat from the self-proclaimed caliphate to Turkish Ambassador in India, Burak Akcapar, intelligence agencies have warned, The Times of India reports on July 24. The alert comes at a time when a major attack took place in Turkey's town of Suruc earlier this week in which more than 32 men were reportedly killed. Top sources revealed that security around the Turkish Embassy, his residence in Lutyen's Delhi and the routes he travels has been increased, along with other Turkish diplomats. Turkish Embassy officials have also been informed about the threat to the ambassador, whose security is handled by Turkish Embassy security officials only, said sources. The alert by central intelligence agencies is being taken seriously as Turkey is a strategic partner in India's fight against the IS, which has captured significant parts of Iraq and Syria using violent means.Apart from the diplomats, intelligence agencies have also sounded the alarm about possible attacks by self-motivated members of IS on Turkish nationals and buildings in India. India and Turkey have joined hands on several counts to fight with IS, which is considered a common threat by the leadership of both the countries.

A 32- page recruitment document in Urdu, titled, 'A Brief History of the Islamic State Caliphate (ISC), The Caliphate According to the Prophet', purported to have been written by Islamic State (IS) terrorists and obtained by the American Media Institute (AMI) through a Pakistani intermediary outlines a strategy to draw the US into an all-out war by attacking India, The Times of India reports on July 30. The document reviewed and first published by USA Today, also details a plot to attack US soldiers as they withdraw from Afghanistan and target American diplomats and Pakistani officials. "Accept the fact that this caliphate will survive and prosper until it takes over the entire world and beheads every last person that rebels against Allah," the document proclaims. "This is the bitter truth, swallow it." Coming on the heels of Pakistani terrorists stepping up attacks on India, the document warns that "preparations" are underway for an assault on India and predicts that such an attack will draw the US into the battle and provoke a confrontation with America. "Even if the US tries to attack with all its allies, which undoubtedly it will, the ummah (Muslims) will be united, resulting in the final battle," the document says. It was obtained by AMI, which said it has been authenticated by US intelligence officials. AMI also said it got the document "from a Pakistani citizen with connections inside the Pakistani Taliban".

In its advisory, the US has mentioned that terrorist organisations like the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) poses a major threat to India. India, it said, continues to experience terrorist and insurgent activities which may affect US citizens directly or indirectly. The four Indian citizens were teaching in a University in Libya for last one year. The abduction took place in Sirte town near the capital city of Tripoli. National Investigation Agency (NIA) sources said they have evidence that shows that the arrested Abu Talha Mohammad Fahim alias Pakhi, chief of a JMB (Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh) faction in Bangladesh, is the same Talha Sheikh accused of masterminding the October 2, 2014 Bardhaman (West Bengal) blast, The Times of India reports on August 1. NIA had earlier declared a INR 10,00,000 reward on him. "We are contacting Dhaka Metropolitan Police and we might even request for his extradition if possible," said an NIA officer in Delhi. Pakhi was arrested by Dhaka Metropolitan Police from near the Bangladesh capital on July 27 along with seven others when they were trying to contact Islamic State (IS) operatives. Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) sources in Bangladesh had earlier said they might either come to Kolkata or ask for the extradition of a few of those arrested so they can be tried for the crimes they committed in Bangladesh. Pakhi is the younger son of JMB's founder Maulana Saidur Rehman. Sources said terror operators like Pakhi keep sleeper cells running by providing everything from shelter to SIM cards for leaders and new recruits, who are either not acquainted with the place or have to remain underground. NIA and Bangladesh's RAB had exchanged lists of JMB operatives and Islamist militants believed to be hiding in the two countries about five months ago. NIA had handed over a list of 11 suspects of the Bardhaman blast. RAB, on the other hand, gave a list of 51 fugitive Bangladeshis, 10 of them said to be JMB activists and several members of Harkatul Jihad al Islami (HuJI), along with some gangsters.
