On August 6, the Jharkhand Government banned the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) and all its frontal organisations in the State. A notification was issued last week in this regard, Jharkhand Home Secretary, J. B. Tubid, said in Ranchi. The ban on the Maoist outfit became necessary as most of the cadres were either with the erstwhile Maoist Communist Centre (MCC) or People’s War Group (PWG) before their merger with the CPI-Maoist. This was learnt from most of the recently arrested extremists, he added.

Telegraph reports that on August 6, security force (SF) personnel killed three Maoists at Garmorwa near Lohawat Pahaad, between the Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand and Gaya district of Bihar. Superintendent of police (SP) Praveen Kumar Singh informed, “however, the bodies were carried away (by the surviving Naxalites)”. A huge cache of arms and ammunition, which were looted from the Giridih armoury in 2005, have also been recovered in the raid, he claimed. Police sources claimed that two groups of extremists, the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) and a splinter group of the erstwhile People’s War Group (PWG) had assembled on the spot to sort out differences between them when the SFs raided. The police recovered arms and ammunition which included two cane bombs, two rifles, 160 rounds of live cartridges, magazines for self-loading rifle, a torch, receipts of levy, medicines and Maoist literature.

The Andhra Pradesh Government on August 11 decided to extend the ban on the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) and six of its frontal organisations by another year till August 16, 2007. The six frontal organisations are Radical Youth League, Rythu Coolie Sangham, Radical Students' Union, Singareni Karmika Samakhya, Viplava Karmika Samakhya and All-India Revolutionary Students' Federation. However, the Viplava Rachaithala Sangham (Virasam) continues to be exempted from the proscription. The Congress Government had banned the CPI-Maoist, the six organizations and the Virasam on August 17, 2005 in the wake of the killing of Makthal legislator, C. Narsi Reddy, in the Narayanpet town of Mahabubnagar. The Virasam was given the exemption after a few months by a screening committee of the Government that examined an appeal against the ban.
