"In their documents, Naxals [Left Wing Extremists, LWEs] have mentioned that their 'urban network' is quite strong in cities like Mumbai, Nagpur, Nashik, Pune and Gondia," said Special Inspector General of Police (IGP), anti-naxal operations, Maharashtra, Sandip Patil. Maoists are targeting youngsters from lower socio-economic groups living in slums for spreading the Maoist ideology and for (engaging them in) military tasks, he added. "They are trying to rope them in for logistical tasks involving ordnance, arms and ammunition, medical help, and for building safe havens in forest and urban localities," he said.

Two women Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, identified as Manisha Thati and Champa Koram, laid down their arms before the Police in Boudh District of Odisha on February 6 to join the mainstream, reports pragativadi.com. Thati and Koram, both residents of the Bijapur District in Chhattisgarh, were associated with the Mahanadi Area Committee of the ‘Kandhamal-Kalahandi-Boudh-Nayagarh (KKBN) division’ of the CPI-Maoist. Inspector General of Police (IGP), Southern Range, Jai Narayan Pankaj, informed us that they were tasked with reactivating the North-South corridor from Jharkhand to Chhattisgarh through south-central Odisha. They had been working in the CPI-Maoist organisation since 2018 and were involved in several violent incidents both in Chhattisgarh and Odisha. They, however, were later disillusioned by the high-handedness and rude behaviour of senior leaders, who allegedly encouraged cannabis cultivation and trade, disrupted electoral processes, sexually harassed female cadres, extorted funds through intimidation, and inducted young boys and girls into the organisation through false promises and propaganda.

The NIA teams raided the premises of the accused and suspects at six locations: two in Hyderabad and one each in Thane, Chennai, Malappuram, and Palakkad. The agency conducted extensive searches, leading to the seizure of incriminating documents and books related to the proscribed CPI-Maoist outfit. The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) has earmarked ‘nine zones’ across India to expand Left-Wing ideology, mobilize masses, and trigger internal disturbances to topple the government, reports The Times of India on February 10. A classified document on Maoist infiltration of urban areas underlines a ‘long-term’ vision of the Maoists to use cities as launchpads to wage a camouflaged war against the ruling establishment. While expanding their urban network, Maoists are also tapping former arrested cadres and surrendered guerrillas to gain insight into the functioning of intelligence agencies, interrogation techniques of Security Forces (SFs), and their unit strengths, hierarchies, and workstations. The zones outlined across India, as per Maoist plan, have been identified as the Ahmedabad-Pune corridor, Delhi region, Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore-Erode belt, Hyderabad, Kolkata, industrial cities of central India, and cities of the Gangetic plain. The four top cities of India on their radar are industrialized cities of Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune, and Surat, which are part of the ‘Ahmedabad-Pune corridor’. The neighbouring cities of Amravati and Gondia are also included in zones of the ‘industrial cities of 'Central India’ where Maoists plan to focus on employee unions and associations for infiltration and agitation.

Police said the 9mm carbine appeared to have been issued by the government to Security Forces (SFs) for use in Naxalite [Left Wing Extremist, LWE] zones. “This is crucial evidence that indicates those arrested were part of a group that attacked the security forces. Two magazines, 20 rounds of live 9mm ammunition, Rs 21,000 in cash, a laptop, SD cards, card readers, organizational literature, and magazines and letters written by purported CPI (Maoist) leaders have been seized,” said STF joint Commissioner of Police Solomon V. Nesakumar. CPI-Maoist ‘central committee (CC)’ member Sabyasachi Goswami alias Kishore Da, who featured on the most-wanted list of the NIA for his role in resurrecting Left Wing Extremism in the Assam-Bengal corridor, had been arrested from Purulia on January 11. Thereafter, ‘state committee member’ of the CPI-Maoist Mondal was arrested from Narendrapur on February 8. Weeks after West Bengal Police arrested Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) leader Sabyasachi Goswami alias Kishore, carrying a reward of INR 1 million on his head from Purulia District on January 12, interrogations revealed that the accused was planning to build a new Maoist squad, including several women, reports etvbharat.com on February 15. As many as 31 women from different parts of the state were included in this new squad, a source informed the Special Task Force (STF) of the Kolkata Police on conditions of anonymity. The source also added that these women in the area were subjected to severe torture and were deprived of various programs. Investigators learned that several top Maoist leaders have been hiding in Jangalmahal's Bankura and Purulia for a long and have been gradually bringing in these women into the squad. The source said that educated women were added so that they could primarily work as sleeper cells for Maoists in several remote villages. Lalbazar's STF detectives claimed that after these ladies got their hands dirty, they would be able to work directly for the Maoist cells. Bihar and Jharkhand Police alerted the STF earlier about the top Maoist leader hiding in Bengal, after which he was arrested.

A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) camp on the Bijapur-Dantewada border in Chhattisgarh was busted by Security Forces (SFs) following two encounters with the Maoists, reports NDTV on February 22. The operation was part of an anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] operation launched by a joint team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) of Bijapur and Dantewada, the Special Task Force (STF), and the 202nd battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force's (CRPF’s) elite Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) on February 20, an official said. The operation was launched following a tip-off about the presence of 70–80 Maoists of the 'Gangalur area committee' of the outlawed CPI-Maoist in the hills of Pidiya and Itawar villages on the Bijapur–Dantewada border, said Bijapur Superintendent of Police (SP) Jitendra Kumar Yadav. "Sensing the presence of the patrolling team, the Maoists opened indiscriminate fire near Itawar village on Wednesday [February 21]. They fled after security forces retaliated. Another gun battle took place near the jungle of Lendra-Korcholi villages when the security forces were returning," the SP said. He said a Maoist camp was busted, and items like uniforms, a solar plate, medicines, etc. were recovered. Blood stains at the spot suggest some Maoists were injured in the gun battle, but it seems their colleagues managed to take them away from the area, he added. Earlier, SATP had reported that an encounter took place between the SFs and the CPI-Maoist cadres in the forest of Pedia Hitwar in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on February 20.

Security Forces (SFs) destroyed a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) camp after an exchange of fire with the Maoists on Gandhamardan Hill near Khandijharan village under Paikmal Police limits in Bargarh District of Odisha on February 23, reports The New Indian Express. Bargarh Superintendent of Police (SP) Prahalad Sahai Meena said, based on the intel about the presence of Maoists on Gandhamardan Hill, an anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] operation was launched by a joint team of the Special Operations Group (SOG) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on February 21. "While the combing operation was underway, an exchange of fire took place between the security forces and the Maoists at around 8.30 a.m. on Friday [February 23]. Following the gun battle, our team searched the area and seized a number of Maoist articles.” Meena informed me that the entire Maoist camp was destroyed in the operation, but there were no casualties. During the search, the SFs recovered Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), eight bags, clothes, food, and other Maoist articles. “We seized some posters purportedly written by Maoists on a few occasions, including in the run-up to the Padampur bypoll in December 2022. However, there was no Maoist violence in Bargarh after the June 2021 encounter. Maoists often use Gandhamardan Hill, spanning over Bolangir and Bargarh districts, as a transit route between Odisha and Chhattisgarh,” the officer said. Sources said the ‘Bolangir-Bargarh and Mahasamund (BBM) division’ of the banned CPI-Maoist is operating along the Odisha-Chhattisgarh border.
