Security Forces (SFs) in Bangladesh have reportedly arrested two top militants, All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) ‘chief’ Ranjit Debbarma and National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) ‘chief’ Biswamohan Debbarma from Dhaka (Dhaka District) in December 2012, according to The Times of India. Police intelligence officials in Agartala (Tripura) on January 4 said Ranjit was arrested from a posh location in Dhaka on December 30 and Biswamohan on December 23 last from nearby areas. Both the militant leaders were arrested by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). The RAB members, after receiving specific information, surrounded the flats in Dhaka and arrested the militant leaders, a source said. According to reports, they have been living in Dhaka for the past two decades. Their arrest comes mere months after Indian Border Security Force (BSF) submitted a list of militant hideouts to Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB).

The Police officials said that those arrested were the aides of the 20 women activists nabbed earlier. On December 17, 2012 the Police raided the Chhatri Sangstha office at Moghbazar in the Dhaka City and arrested 20 leaders and cadres, including the wife of the war crime suspect, Quader Mollah.

Some 30 persons, including four Policemen, were injured after leaders and cadres of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) clashed with Police in Dhaka city and Gaibandha District on January 24, reports The Daily Star. In Dhaka city, 12 cadres of JeI-ICS were injured and six of them arrested when Police intercepted procession brought out by JeI-ICS cadres. In Gaibandha District, clashes erupted when Police intercepted another procession brought out by JeI-ICS cadres at Station Bazar Road demanding immediate release of their detained leaders. At least 14 JeI-ICS cadres and four Policemen sustained injuries. Gaibandha Additional Superintendent of Police Mosharaf Hossain said the cadres in the procession were armed with various weapons.

In an apparent bid to create panic among the people united on the demand for death penalty to war criminals, Jamaat-e-Islam (JeI) and Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) rampaged through different parts of Dhaka city on February 12, reports The Daily Star. The JeI-ICS cadres carried out hit-and-run assault at Police, leaving at least 30 injuries. 73 JeI-ICS cadres were arrested in the city. Meanwhile, at least 65 people, including 14 Policemen, were injured in clashes between JeI-ICS cadres and the law enforcers in Satkhira, Noakhali and Khulna Districts on February 12. In Satkhira District, seven Policemen were wounded in attacks by the JeI-ICS cadres and Police arrested 103 cadres in the District. In Noakhali District, at least eight JeI-ICS cadres were injured when they fought a pitched battle with Police. In Khulna District, at least 50 people, including seven Policemen, were injured when the JeI-ICS cadres clashed with law enforcers. Seven cadres were arrested after the incident on charge of attacking Police and obstructing law enforcers in discharging their duties.

They recovered six firearms, 28 bullets and 200 Yaba tablets from the arrestees. The arrested smugglers were identified as Mobarak Hossain Masud (30), Shahidul Islam Khokon (32), Fakhrul Islam Apu (31), and Sumon Hossain, 24, Halima Akhter Liza, 22, Imran and Indian national Suchandra Rabeya, (19). Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Sanwar said that Apu was an activist of the Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, a major front organisation the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), in Comilla town (Comilla District) and had been involved in arms smuggling for around seven years. “An opposition leader of the city’s Mirpur area had asked Apu to bring him 15 firearms before the upcoming elections. Apu had already supplied him two firearms.” said, ADC. ADC further said that about 70 percent of Apu’s recently smuggled arms had been supplied to political leaders in and outside the capital. The ADC however could not ascertain the number of arms Apu had supplied. “We are trying to figure out the number of political leaders who had received the arms,” he said, adding that they had already got names of some political leaders but could not disclose those for the sake of investigation”.

60 BNP activists were injured in a clash with Awami League (AL) and Police as Police obstructed a procession on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Kandail area in Narsingdi District on December 29, reports The Independent. Witnesses said that as BNP led by Narsingdi BNP President Khairul Kabir Khokan brought out a procession to join the March for Democracy programme in Dhaka city. Local AL activists headed by Abdul Wadud and accompanied by Narsingdi Police obstructed the procession when it reached Kandail triggering a clash. Police arrested 62 BNP activists including Khairul Kabir Khokan at that time.

Two persons were killed and many others were injured during the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led 18-party nationwide protest on December 29, reports New Age. In Dhaka city, one person was killed during clashes between the activists of BNP-led 18-party alliance and Police in Malibagh. The deceased was identified as Mansur Prodhaniya (24), president of ward no 3 unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI). He was a student of a private university of city’s Uttara area. Seven of ICS cadres also sustained bullet injuries. Police arrested cadres at the clash. Abul Kashem (30), a member of the Railway Security Force, died when two young people exploded a crude bomb on his face on the platform at the Kamalapur Railway Station of Dhaka City. Two youths who were carrying the bomb were also injured in the blast. Police said two youths — Alam (18) and Aminul (16) — were entering the railway station through the rail tracks from a level crossing. As the two youths reached beat No 17 of the station, railway security guard Kashem challenged them. Sensing danger, Aminul hurled the bag containing the bomb at the face of Kashem and soon it went off with a big bang, killing Kashem on the spot and injuring Alam and Aminul themselves.
