Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested four members of militant outfit Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), including its coordinator in Bangladesh, from Dhaka city's Jatrabari on January 18, reports The Daily Star. The arrestees were identified as Sakhawatul Kabir, a representative and coordinator of ISIS in Bangladesh, Nazrul Islam, a financier, Anwar Hossain alias Baten, a convict of an explosive case, and Rabiul Islam. They were picked up on charges of planning subversive activities, said Masudur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. Three persons were killed and many others were injured during the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led 20-party alliance's countrywide blockade on February 4, reports The Daily Star. In Dhaka city, two youths were killed in a gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Jatrabari area. The identities of the youths, aged between 25 and 30, could not be confirmed. RAB officials said that when a team of RAB was patrolling in Jatrabari area all of a sudden, brick chunks were hurled at the RAB vehicle. Several crude bombs went off on the road and gun shots were fired at the team, forcing the law enforcers to open fire on the thugs. Later, RAB found two bullet-hit people lying in a pool of blood there. One gun, two petrol bombs and eight crude bombs were recovered from the spot. In another incident, Rashedul (25), who had suffered 80 percent burn injuries on February 3 gruesome firebomb attack on a bus in Comilla District died at the Intensive Care Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Separately, a suspected bomber, Kawsar Khan was injured when Police shot for blasting crude bombs at Amtoli in Shahjahanpur area. Police said they fired three shots at Kawsar when he was fleeing the area after exploding two crude bombs. Kawsar received bullets in his legs. In Gazipur District, pickets firebombed a passenger bus in Noujani area burning at least five including a child. The victims are Rakib (12), Mohammad Sabuj (20), Kamrul Hasan (28), Jahangir Hossain (42) and Mariam Akter Rupa (7). In Chittagong District, two rickshaw pullers were injured as suspected blockade supporters blasted crude bombs. In drives against the violence that has been plaguing the country for a month now, law enforcers arrested 34 people in Satkhira District and three Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) activists in Bogra District.

Police said that Mehmud confessed to them of being a member of ISI. Mehmud entered Bangladesh on November 7, 2014, with an e-visa for employment or service with three months validity. On November 19, 2014, he took a job at Sreepur's Unilance Textile of Gazipur District as an electric engineer. On February 15, 2015, he extended his visa which expired on May 6, 2015. Since then he had been staying in the country illegally. Police further said that Mehmud had a good rapport with Mohammad Mazhar Khan, a Pakistan High Commission official who was withdrawn from Bangladesh on January 31 after intelligence dug out his involvement in terror financing and currency forgery racket.

Police arrested an activist of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) from Dhaka city's Tejgaon area on November 24 for allegedly threatening noted intellectuals of the country with death, reports Dhaka Tribune. The arrestee is Abdul Haque. He is a madrasa teacher in Sylhet District. Police said “So far we have found evidence of Abdul's group giving death threats to some 153 eminent citizens, including Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, Professor Emeritus Dr Anisuzzaman, Professor Muntasir Mamun, Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee leader Shahriar Kabir and Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal. Police arrested six leaders of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), with 11 crude bombs in Arambagh area in Dhaka on November 27, reports The Daily Star. A team of Motijheel Police conducted the raid on information that the leaders gathered at a students’ mess to plan subversive activities, and arrested the ICS leaders from Arambagh area, Sheikh Mofizur Rahman, a Sub-Inspector (SI) of Motijheel Police Station, said. The arrested ICS leaders are Motijheel Thana unit president Abdur Rahman, its general secretary Afzal Hossain Himel, Paltan Thana unit president Russel Amin, president of ward No. 9 Abdur Rahman, president of ward No. 8 president Alamgir Hossain and its general secretary Abdul Quaiyum. The arrestees are AHM Khairul Asad alias Sohag, Mir Moazzem Hossain Saifi alias Jarmin and Kafil Uddin Bin Amin. Sohag is a mobile company engineer and used to jam networks in areas where JMB Sura members were holding meetings to prevent law enforcers from tracking them.
