National Investigation Agency (NIA) on January 12 arrested Naorem Premkanta Singh of Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), a key accused in an attack on Army convoy in 2015 in which 18 soldiers were killed, reports Times of India. According to NIA spokesperson, the militant was arrested in a joint operation with Manipur Police. A pistol and five live rounds were recovered from him. NIA had identified as many as 14 of the 23 militants who had taken part in the attack.

His arrest led to arrest of two NSCN-K militants identified as Khamjang Rongmei and Thuanguangpou Kamei. INR 2,00,000 was recovered from the arrestees.nterrogation revealed that an engineer of a private firm Bharatiya Company Limited which is undertaking construction work in Manipur was abducted and the company had paid INR 2.5 million for his release on May 10. A militant also stated that INR 1.3 million was being transported by wife of ‘deputy secretary of revenue’. The information was shared with Imphal West District Police and they arrested her at Koirengei in Imphal East District and recovered the money she was transferring.Later on the same day, another NSCN-K cadre was arrested from Police Bazaar in Shillong in East Khasi Hills District, reports Northeast Today. Three National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K) were arrested on September 23 with sophisticated weapons from New Kaiphundai area of Tamenglong District of Manipur, reports Northeast Today. The recovered arms include two US Made M series Assault Rifles, around 425 rounds of live ammunition and three hand grenades. The militants were involved in abduction of a truck driver on September 21 when he refused to pay the extortion amount demanded by them. The cadres had also resorted to firing of 10-15 rounds to intimidate the truck drivers during the incident. Earlier on September 21, militants fired several rounds of guns at Imphal-bound goods-laden trucks after looting the truckers along Imphal-Jiribam section of NH-37 in Imphal West District, reports Nagaland Post. The looting and firing incident took place at 193 Milestone, where loaded trucks were waiting for security escorts. As per a complaint lodged by the drivers to the Police, the militants collected INR 35,000 and 20 mobile phones. Northeast Today further adds that due to economic importance of this highway, a number of incidents of extortions, kidnappings and illegal tax collection are reported along it. Insurgent groups such as United Tribal Liberation Army (UTLA), NSCN-K and NSCN-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM). Security Forces had launched a major drive against these illegal activities in which UTLA-P ‘commander in chief’ and four militants were arrested in a series of operation from June 10 onwards. In the recent past, four active cadres of Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF), including its ‘secretary of HR and Welfare’, were arrested along with arms and ammunition from village Ramgaijang, which lies along NH-37, in Cachar District of Assam.

Suspected to be involved in the killing of KNF cadres, Boithang Haokip was frequently on the move and regularly moved to Moreh to avoid being caught. Over the past few months SDFK is believed to have established its base in Moreh.

The identity of one more suspect could not be ascertained.
