Locked="falThe Border Security Forces (BSF) increased boatrelated patrolling and check posts along the riverine border that separates India and Pakistan, to prevent infiltratand smuggling operations, Hindustan Times reports on January 22. The BSF has identified around 140 porous gaps along the border in Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat. For instance, in the 553 kilometerlong riverine belt through which the rivers Ravi, Sutlej and Beas flow and keep changing their courses, the BSF has introduced improvised systems to augment the security apparatus. The riverine border has been a challenge for border guards to stop smugglers and other unwanted activities. In the past, the BSF has not only seized contraband drugs and fake currency but also gunned down many smugglers and recovered arms and ammunitfrom them. BSF officials say that border fencing at some places have got damaged because of the water pressure. Inspector General of the Border Range of the BSF Anil Paiwal said, “We have a roundtheyear planning and strategy for overall dominatof the border, especially at riverine gaps. The planning includes physical obstruction, deployment, lighting and alarm system etc. We also undertake ‘boat nakas’ on country made as well as motorboats in the river. For elaborate security, our commanders have the strategies and deployment for the dominatof areas and our jawans are on a high state of alert.”According to available data, between 2010 and 2014, the BSF seized 367 kilograms of heroin and 119 arms.

On January 21, two people lost their lives in an explosion while they were allegedly making crude bombs at Dubrajpur in Birbhum district of West Bengal, reports Zee News. The incident occurred at Dubrajpur in Birbhum late last night. The Police have recovered a huge quantity of explosives from the site. Over the past one year, West Bengal has been under the scanner of security agencies as a "secure hideout" for agents of Pakistan's InterServices Intelligence (ISI).It is feared that that banned organisations like the JamaatulMujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) has spread its network in Howrah, and both North and South 24Parganas Districts and set up organisational bases in Districts like Murshidabad, Nadia, Bardhaman and Birbhum.

According to Union Ministry of Home Affairs (UMHA), while those detained were being monitored for around six months, some communication and attempts to get firearms and IED material had “precipitated the matter.”Online monitoring of the group also revealed that some of them had plans of organising a terror training camp. Most of those held were allegedly in direct contact with former Indian Mujahideen (IM) operative Shafi Armar, and there were “cross linkages” between members of the group. The UMHA, however, said there was no evidence so far to link the group directly to the Islamic State (IS). “This group was handled by someone going by the name Yousuf on the internet, who is suspected to be former Indian Mujahideen member Shafi Armar. We are not sure whether he is directly linked to the Islamic State or where he is located, as this is subject to investigation,” said UMHA spokesperson. Describing as “eclectic” the jehadi literature the group was influenced by, the spokesperson added, “At this stage, it is clear that these youth were radicalised, and their online handler was an exIM element.” “There is no connection to Delhi or evidence to suggest they were planning to target Delhi. A very preliminary assessment indicates that they may have been planning something in their own areas of residence,” the spokesperson said. In India, the alleged “organiser” or mobiliser of the group has been identified as Mutabbir Mushtaq Sheikh, who was arrested on January 22 from Mumbra on the outskirts of Mumbai. He allegedly received a sum of INR 6,00,000 online that is unaccounted for. “Online radicalisation has been on the radar of intelligence agencies for some time. As a part of that, the initial action taken was the arrest of some persons in Haridwar who were under scrutiny for online communication with some elements. They were planning to source explosives to set off blasts in a train, and were also thinking of doing something later in Harkipauri. Those detained today are a larger group connected to this group,” the spokesperson said.

The suspected Islamic State of Syria and Iraq (ISIS) terrorists arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) were collecting chemicals used in matchsticks and explosive of firecrackers for the past seven months with an aim to launch attacks in different parts of the country, reports The Times of India on February 1. The preliminary reports of the explosive seized from the arrested suspects indicate that the chemicals are potassium chlorate and potassium nitrate, said one of the officials. "Due to the recent restrictions by the government on purchase of ammonium nitrate, the modus operandi of the group here appears to be to collect the other easily available explosives," said a senior official. The final laboratory report is still awaited, he said.

On March 19,Police seized a cache of explosives, including detonators from a bag stashed in a hostel room in Ujjain, ringing alarm bells about a possible terror strike at the mahakumbh, reports The Times of India. The seizure comes exactly a month after the arrests of runaway Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) operatives who had enacted the daring Khandwa jailbreak. Owner of the bag, Sajid Khan, had checked into Room No. 212, Atishay Sheel Jain Hostel on March 18 after showing his Aadhar card at the counter. He left the room soon after dumping his luggage and told the manager he was going out for lunch.Police, however, refused to divulge the nature of explosives. "We found suspicious material, which we can't disclose due to security reasons," said Additional Superintendent of Police Amrendra Singh. Ujjain and nearby towns like Nagda and Mahidpur have been safe havens of terror suspects. In last three months, officials picked up former SIMI operators and Indian Mujahideen (IM) sympathisers from Mahidpur after months of surveillance on their movements.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) said that explosive material Triacetone triperoxide (TATP), used in recent Paris (November 13, 2015) and Brussels (March 22, 2016) attacks, was recovered from the basement of a house that belonged to Islamic State (IS) operative arrested on June 29, from Hyderabad, reports india.com. TATP was recovered from the Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Amoodi alias Fahad’s house in Hyderabad. NIA said that IS module leader Mohammed Ibrahim Yazdani alias Ibbu procured large amounts of acetone hydrogen peroxide and sulphuric acid, which are the main ingredients in TATP. The explosive have become popular among Al-Qaeda and IS the ingredients are easily available in medical and cosmetic stores. The IS module arrested from Hyderabad was preparing IEDs (Improvised Explosive Device) for commission of terror acts and were being guided by an online handler suspected to be based in Iraq/Syria. NIA recovered firearms, ammunition, precursor chemicals for making explosives, digital exhibits and INR 15,00,000 cash from the searched locations. NIA also seized two semi-automatic pistols with ammunition, an air gun with telescopic sight and shooting practice target boards, a large number of digital items including six laptops, about 40 mobile phones, 32 SIM cards, and a large number of hard disks, memory cards, pen drives, and digital tabs.New Indian Express adds that the operatives had plans to carry out terror strikes in various parts of the country after executing their nefarious designs in Hyderabad. They had tentatively planned to carry out multiple bomb blasts Hyderabad on Saturday (July 2) evening.Further, according to dailymail.uk, with the five arrests from Hyderabad, the number of IS recruits in custody has gone up to 54. Recent arrests and intelligence reviews show that the terror group is working on a franchise model, urging young Muslim youths to carry out local strikes. NIA says the rookies were in touch with a former Indian Mujahideen (IM) operative who is now part of IS, and were plotting terror strikes and communal clashes.

On October 14, Border Security Force (BSF) troops recovered two country-made pistols, four magazines and five rounds of ammunition near Churiantpur in Malda District, reports The Times of India. "The country-made automatic pistols were probably made in Munger in Bihar and were being sent across the border to Bangladesh. On Friday evening, troops of the 24Bn BSF from BOP Churiantpur received a tip-off regarding gunrunning activity. During a special joint operation with the police, two groups were seen approaching a mandir from the Churiantpur and Gulapganj sides. The two groups met near the mandir and were challenged by the security personnel. The miscreants managed to escape due to poor visibility and waterlogging. While escaping they dropped a cloth bag that was retrieved by the troops. The two guns, magazines and cartridges were found inside," a senior BSF officer said. The Indo-Bangladesh border along Kaliachak and Baishnabnagar in Malda District of West Bengal is fast emerging as a transit route for illegal arms. Over the last few weeks, the BSF seized several arms consignments being smuggled into Bangladesh. Some of these could be for operatives of Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), security agencies suspect. So far, in 2016, the BSF's South Bengal Frontier apprehended seven weapons smugglers and seized 22 air guns, six pistols and 35 country made pistols close to the border.
