The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres disrupted polling at many places during the first phase of the Chhattisgarh Panchayat (village level local self Government institution) elections on January 28, plundering ballot boxes and targeting poling parties and security personnel, reports The Hindu. The Maoists plundered ballot boxes at 13 polling booths in Sukma District, two in Kanker District and six in Dantewada District of the Bastar region. The Police and Maoists exchanged fire near Chilparas and Markanar in Kanker District. The Police recovered two guns from the spot of the gunfight. Voting was peaceful in other parts of the State. Overall, 70 per cent polling was recorded.

"The rebel-- who is yet to be identified-- was killed in an exchange of fire between a joint team of security personnel and ultras in the restive Gadiras police station limits late last night," Sukma Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Santosh Singh told PTI. "A group of armed insurgents opened indiscriminate firing on them in a hilly area of Gadgad village last night following which security personnel retaliated," he said. Later, during search of the spot in the wee hours, the body of a woman Naxal in uniform was recovered along with a 12 bore gun, a pipe bomb, cartridges and other material, the ASP said.

The exchange of fire occurred at around 9 am [date not specified] when Maoists opened fire on a joint team of Special Task Force (STF) and District Force (DF) which was carrying out search operation in the area. After intermittent firing, which lasted for about an hour, the Maoists fled away, Police said. After the gun battle, the body of a Maoist, yet to be identified, was found. A 303 rifle, live ammunition, Tiffin bomb, wire, pipe bomb, medicines and daily use items were also recovered.

Dharmu Yadav (26), ‘section commander’ of military company-6 of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), was killed in an encounter between Maoists and the Police in Kondagaon District on April 23, reports The Times of India. The gun-battle took place in the forests near Matwal village under Mardapal Police Station limits when a team of District Police was carrying out a search operation in the wee hours on Thursday (April 23), Kondagaon Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhishek Meena said. On sensing Police near the village, a group of armed rebels indiscriminately fired at them following which the Security Force (SF) personnel retaliated. However, the ultras soon fled to the dense forest on finding SF personnel zeroing-in on them. During a search, the body of Yadav in uniform along with a pistol and four live cartridges were recovered. Yadav was active in Narayanpur and Kondagaon Districts.

A hardcore Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) ‘commander’, identified as Phool Singh, carrying reward of INR 500,000 on his head was killed while another was arrested following an encounter between Maoists and Police in forests under Ghanora Police Station limits in Kondagaon District on May 1, reports The Pioneer. Singh was the ‘commander’ of Barda dalam (squad) of the CPI-Maoist. Police had received intelligence inputs about presence of Maoists in the forests of Ghanora. Accordingly a team of Police personnel swung into action and reached the spot, Kondagaon Superintendent of Police (SP), Abhishek Meena said. Sensing presence of Police team the armed Maoists opened indiscriminate fire on them following which Police retaliated, leaving a Maoist ‘commander’ dead. After gun battle that lasted for around two hours, Maoists fled into the jungle. However, one of them was arrested while trying to flee from the spot, the SP said. The arrested Maoist was identified as Rakesh, ‘commander’ of Antagarh dalam. Later Security Forces (SFs) recovered body of the Maoist along with two hand grenades, Maoist literature, documents, diaries, medicines and commodities of daily use from the spot, the SP added. State Government had declared reward of INR 500,000 on the head of killed Maoist Phool Singh and Rakesh also carried reward of INR 500,000 on his arrest, the SP informed. However, according to The Hindu, the reward Phool Singh carried was INR 1.5 million.

Maoists fired indiscriminately on BSF personnel who were patrolling in the proximity of Chhote Baithiya BSF camp under Bande Police Station area late on April 12 night, Kanker Superintendent of Police (SP) Jitendra Singh Meena told PTI. The intermittent firing lasted for about two hours following which the Maoists disappeared into dense forests, he added. While cordoning off Mirtoor region, SF personnel spotted a Naxal camp near Bechapal village following which they started encircling the spot. The gun battle ensued when a group of armed Maoists opened indiscriminate fire on a joint team of Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), Special Task Force (STF) and the state's District Reserve Group (DRG), who were conducting anti-Maoist operation in the region. SFs retaliated and the gunfight lasted for around two hours. The Police recovered bodies of three Maoists along with two rifles from the spot. After gunning down the three Maoists in an encounter in Sukma, Chhattisgarh Police on November 3, said the SFs would continue its operation with an aim to hunt down top Maoist leaders, adds The Times of India. Talking to reporters at Jagdalpur, the divisional headquarters of Bastar, Inspector General of Police (IGP) (Bastar range) S R P Kalluri said senior Maoist leaders, who hail from the neighbouring states, usually push the local dalam (armed squad) members in the forefront. "Our aim is to cordon the area and strike against the Maoist leadership", he added. Kalluri said the DRG personnel, constituting locals, are already back after training in jungle warfare and are engaged in the operations. He said Maoist cadres, including the grass root level dalam and other supporters, would be encouraged to surrender and avail the benefits of state government's rehabilitation policy.

Close to Hallur, the rebels opened fire on the forces. In the ensuing gun-battle, four Maoists, including the head of intelligence wing of Bhairamgarh unit, identified as Rainu, were killed,” the Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Bijapur, Indira Kalyan Elesela said. There is no report of any injury sustained by the forces.
