The camp of SFs was established on February 13 in Gundem village under Tarrem Police Station limits, and the explosives were recovered the next day (Wednesday, February 14) when security personnel were carrying out a de-mining exercise in an adjoining forest to trace IEDs, a senior official said, adding, ''The IEDs, packed in steel boxes, were found placed beneath the earth in forests to target security personnel during their patrolling in the area.'' The Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) of the Bijapur Police neutralised the bombs, he added. On Tuesday, when the camp was being set up, some Maoists opened fire on security personnel who were engaged in cordoning off the area, triggering a gunbattle, he said. After a brief exchange of fire, the Maoists escaped, taking cover of a forested hill, he added. SFs also dismantled a Maoist memorial in Gundem, the official said.
