A woman CPI-Maoist cadre, identified as Sancharia Ganju alias Sushama (20) belonging to Ranchi District of Jharkhand, of Saranda ‘sub-committee’ of Sambalpur-Deogarh-Sundergarh (SDS) Division surrendered before Sambalpur District Police on March 16, reports The Times of India. Sambalpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Pratik Mohanty said she gave up without any arms. She is six months pregnant. Sancharia joined the Maoists as a member of cultural team in 2007 and was inducted as an armed cadre in 2009. She was married to ‘deputy commander’, Saranda ‘sub-committee’, Bhima Luhura in 2010. She was one among 30 members who entered Sambalpur area recently to reorganize the SDS division.

Those who surrendered were identified as Ladda Nachika, Kayu Nachika, Rajeya Kendruka, Rameya Kendruka, Kesari Kenduka from Dumsil village (Koraput District) and Rabi Huluka, Sekaru Huluka, Siu Huluka from Basanaput village (Koraput District). The surrender took place in the presence of Inspector General of Police (IGP) South-Western Range Yashwant Jethwa, Inspector General (IG) of Border Security Force (BSF) A.K.Sharma and Koraput Superintendent of Police (SP) Awinash Kumar.

The woman Maoist identified as Jambo Mandingi alias Walsi (25), of Rajengipadar village under Narayanpatna Police limits was carrying INR 200,000 reward on her head. Police said Mandingi had joined the CPI-Maoist in 2009 and was working for its Koraput-Srikakulam division. "She underwent arms training in Sudishi forest of Narayanpatna and was an expert in use of guns, including LMG and Insas. She is skilled in making landmines and master of guerrilla warfare," said Superintendent of Police (SP) Awinash Kumar. "She was involved in various offensives and was moving with Maoist leader Aruna. Her case has been recommended for approval for rehabilitation under the state government's surrender policy for Maoists," he added.

Four Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, each of whom with INR 100,000 reward on them, surrendered in Koraput District on June 6, reports The Hindu. All of them were part of the Srikakulam Koraput Divisional Committee (SKDC) and were active in Narayanpatna area of the District. Among the surrendered cadres included an ‘area committee’ member Krishna Praska along with Kosai Wateka alias Nirmala, Raju Hikoka alias Kiran and Durjan Mandingi. Meanwhile, six armed Maoists including two females surrendered before Police in Koraput District on June 22, reports The Hindu. All of them were part of the Srikakulam-Koraput Divisional Committee (SKDC) under Andhra Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee (AOBSZC) of the CPI-Maoist. The surrendered Maoists were identified as Jeera Kendruka of Dumshil village, Kadulu Mandingi of Kamlapadar, Musuri Sirika of Ichhapur, Uttra Bingodika of Tanginipadar as well as two female cadres, Pramila Wadeka of Dekapadu and Susmita Mandingi of Narikhilwa. After surrender all of them claimed that they had realised futility of violent acts of Maoists.

The surrendered Maoists were identified as Jakrius Munda of Jhirpani under Koira Police Station and Harun Munda of Banko under K Bolanga Police Station, both in Sundargarh District; Jagdish Naik of Thalokbad under Chhatragara Police Station and Baiga Gagaria of Nuagaon under Jaraikela Police Station, both in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand. Jakrius, Harun and Jagdish were part of the Anmol group, while Baig was part of the Madhusudan Tarpat group of the CPI-Maoist, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Santosh Mohanty said. Jakrius, carrying a reward of INR 100,000 on his head, had joined Maoist camp in 2010 after being forced by his maternal uncle Gunga Munda, an active Maoist leader, was involved in many violent activities in May 2012 in Odisha and Jharkhand. Nachika was arrested after his surrender. Inspector General of Police (IGP) of south west range, Yashwant Jethwa said, “He was arrested after his surrender.” Nachika has around 43 cases pending against him in Koraput District, including that of murder, murder attempt and instigation of violence. He had 33 non-bailable warrants against him. Apart from this, he also has cases pending against him in Police Stations of Parvatipuram area of Andhra Pradesh. According to Jethwa, Nachika would be sent to court on October 29.

Addressing a Press meet, Rourkela Additional Superintendent of Police Santosh Kumar Mohanty and Mahila Police Station Inspector in Charge (IIC) Prativa Majhi informed that Kullus, a resident of Dahichor under Gurundia block of the District, had fallen in love with one Suria about four months ago. Suria had promised her to marry and she had eloped with him, but she had no idea that Suria is a Maoist cadre. Suria engaged her in Maoist activities. After she became sick, she fled from the Maoist organisation and surrendered before the Police. “As per the provision for surrendered Maoists, we will provide her all necessary support,” said IIC Prativa Majhi.

The surrendered cadres have confessed to their involvement in a number of Maoist violence cases on the Odisha-Jharkhand border areas under Deogarh and Sambalpur Districts and said they under the leadership of Central Military Commission (CMC) members Samarji, Ajay Dehuri and Mishir Besra alias Sagar have killed innocent Adivasis in the name of ‘police informers’. SP Singh informed that the four along with other cadres had been collecting extortion money from industrialists, businessmen and contactors and had joined a number of ‘Praja Court’ (People’s Court, euphemism for Kangaroo court). He was carrying a cash reward of INR 100,000 on him and involved in numerous Maoist activities in the Districts of Sambalpur, Deogarh and Sundargarh. Singh said Ekka joined the Left Wing Extremists in 2010 under Maoist regional ‘commander’ Prasad of South Chottanagarpur Division. In 2012, he shifted to Kolhan Barai forest in Saranda and underwent arms training. From then on, he was acting as ‘section commander’ under the charge of Samarjee. He said the Maoist ideology has been diluted which is why he chose to join the mainstream.
