Assistant Constable Rup Singh Thakur (35) was allegedly abducted and killed by Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres in Matda village of Bijapur District on January 2, reports Zee News. The Policeman posted at Jangla Police Station limits was abducted by the Maoists while he was returning from his duty, said Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sukhnandan Rathore. Thakur had earlier worked as a Special Police Officer (SPO) during Salwa Judum movement and was later appointed as Assistant Constable.

Armed Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres killed a man and his wife in Rangkala village in Bihar’s Jamui District in the night of January 19, reports The Hindu. Over 20 armed Maoists, wearing police uniform, raided the house of Gyani Yadav in Rangkala village and killed his wife Siya Devi by pumping bullets into her chest, officer in-charge of Jhajha Police Station Sumit Kumar said. They abducted Yadav and later killed him on the outskirts of the village and fled, he said. Villagers said Yadav was earlier associated with a militant organisation.

Two staff of a school, run by a private organisation, have been kidnapped by Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres in Koraput District on January 24, reports The Business Standard. They have been identified as school in-charge Sukanta Satapathy and librarian Chinmayee Parida of Auro Mira Vidya Mandir situated at Kechla, across Kolab reservoir under Koraput block. A group of eight armed persons, including three women, reached the school and forcibly took away Satapathy and Parida. Before leaving, they told the other staff that they were kidnapping the two as their higher authorities did not pay any attention to their demand.

Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres killed two persons, identified as Deba Sodi and Erma Banjarni of Silakota village under Padia Police Station area in Malkangiri District on January 26, suspecting them as Police informers, reports news.outlookindia.com. The duo were abducted from their houses on January 25 and killed after producing them at Maoist's praja court (peoples’ court). Family members of those deceased, however, have cremated the bodies without informing the Police about the incident. Meanwhile, the Maoists' Malkangiri Division ‘spokesperson’ Poonam Chanra in an audio message claimed that the duo was killed as their information had helped the Police to launch an attack on them on September 13, 2013 when around 13 Maoists were killed.

A tribal activist of a Non Government Organisation (NGO), identified as Sadanand Hantal (25), was killed by Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres in the cut-off area of Balimela reservoir in Malkangiri District on February 5, reports The Hindu. Hantal belonged to Sarkubandha village of Ralegada area. He along with some others was involved in projects of Odisha Tribal Empowerment and Livelihood Program (OTELP) as well as in sectors related to health and sanitation in the cut off area. Malkangiri Superintendent of Police (SP) Akhileswar Singh said Sadanand, along with three other NGO activists working in the area, had been abducted by a group of Maoists from Sarkubandha on February 2 night. The killing of Sadanand came to the fore when his family members located his corpse inside Singavaram jungle near their village on February 5. According to Police sources, the other three persons who had been abducted by the Maoists along with Sadanand had been released.

Ratan Kumar Ranasandha, a student of Class VII of the Mandasura Ashram School, went missing on his way to school from his village Kirima on January 3. “Police have taken the incident very seriously as the banned CPI (Maoist) in Kandhamal district is reportedly targeting teenagers for recruitment,” Police said.

In a late night strike on March 13, a group of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres abducted six labourers from Navinagar village in Jamui District close to the border of Lakhisarai District in Bihar, reports The Hindu. The incident took place around 10 p.m. when the labourers were working at a sand loading site. “The Maoists, who came from Gopalpur village in Lakhisarai, took away seven labourers but on the way they left behind one person, who was old and inebriated,” Jamui Superintendent of Police (SP) Jitendra Rana told The Hindu. The Maoists also set two earth mover machines on fire. They put up four posters, naming the site contractors and warning the villagers not to work for them.

The Maoists released the labourers at an isolated place from where they walked upto Malaypur Railway Station and boarded a train to reach their respective villages, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Surendra Singh said. The abducted labourers were identified as Anjay Singh, Raju Yadav, Pappu Yadav, Bachhu Yadav, Jitesh Sao, Rajeev Singh and Bambam Singh. The Maoists had abducted ten labourers while they were working at a sand mine site in Navinagar village. However, three of them were released on the same day.

A villager was found dead with his throat slit on March 29, hours after Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) had abducted him and four others from Dhabatar village of Jamui District, reports Telegraph. According to sources, around 30 armed Maoists raided Dhabatar village. One Sona Yadav managed to escape while a few hours later the rebels set Umesh Yadav, Rabindar Koda and Khublal Koda free. But the villagers recovered the body of Ajay Koda (27) in an adjacent forest with his throat slit. Jamui Superintendent of Police (SP) Jitendra Rana said the Police suspected CPI-Maoist zonal commander Sidhu Koda’s direct involvement in the incident.

Police officials said that a group of armed Maoists raided Tikanpal village in the night of May 4 and took a few people as hostages. They took them to a nearby place and assaulted them so severely that one of them died. The person died is identified as Ayatu Budu. Other two persons sustained critical injuries. In the other incident the Maoists raided Kaurgaon village under Bangpal Police Station and dragged Sarpanch Mani Ram from his home and took him to the nearby forest. After killing him with a sharp weapon, the Maoists threw his body on the road.

Over half a dozen tribal people, who were reportedly abducted by suspected cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) from Pega village in Chintur mandal (administrative unit) in East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh in the night of December 27, returned home on December 31 much to the relief of their anxious family members, reports The Hindu. The tribals, however, were silent about their ‘abduction’. The local Police feigned ignorance of any such development. Sources said the Maoists grilled them at a ‘Praja Court’ (people’s court, Kangaroo court) in the forests somewhere along the inter-State border with Chhattisgarh. The incident assumed significance as suspected Maoists recently sustained a shock from an electric wire laid by villagers to protect their crops from wild animals.
