One National Socialist Council of Nagaland - Khaplang (NSCN-K) militant was killed by his colleagues when he along with four others tried to escape from the outfit’s camp at Samjiuram under Jalukie sub-division in the Peren district on January 2, reports United News of India. Five militants, hailing from the Chanlang district of Arunachal Pradesh, were trying to escape from their camp when the other militants chased them and shot dead one of them. However, two of the fleeing cadres surrendered before the police at Jalukie, one of them managed to escape and the other was captured by the NSCN-K militants. Police later recovered the slain militant’s body as well as empty shells of SBBL and AK rifles.

Telegraph reports that Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres shot dead Ramprasad Mondal, a local committee member of the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and a primary teacher, in Madhabpur village under Chapra police station of Nadia district, on January 2. "The murder is the handiwork of Maoists. Police movement is difficult in the area because of poor road links. The Maoists are taking advantage of that to strengthen their base in Chapra," Nadia district Superintendent of Police, H.K. Kusumakar, said. Around 50 printed leaflets found at the incident site warned villagers against testifying in cases pending against the Maoists. Some posters also warned the villagers against co-operating with the police.

One surrendered cadre of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), identified as Raja Basumatary, was shot dead by another surrendered cadre of the same outfit, Bigrai Basumatary, at his rented house at Gwjunpuri in Kokrajhar town on January 3-night, reports Sentinel. According to Champa Basumatary, wife of Raja, Bigrai and Raja Basumatary had disputes over financial matters. “Bigrai shot my husband dead from point blank range at the rented house,” Champa Basumatary said. Bigrai was arrested by the police. Raja had joined the NDFB in 1993 and surrendered along with his killer Bigrai in 2002.

Three militants of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit were killed by security forces (SFs) in two separate encounters at Bikhrain and Bhagwah in the Doda district and recovered a large quantity of arms and ammunition from them on January 12, reports Daily Excelsior. In the first incident, troops cordoned the house of one Mangta Bhat at village Bikhrain under the jurisdiction of Doda police station and shot dead two top LeT militants who had taken shelter in the house. The slain cadres were identified as Altaf Hussain and Irshad Ahmed. Troops recovered two AK rifles, two magazines, 37 rounds, one wireless set, three grenades, eight detonators and explosive material from their possession.

He trained in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) from 1994 to 1995, and was then assigned the charge of instructing new recruits at a HuJI-run camp near Mansehra. He is believed to have returned to Jammu and Kashmir in 1999, and served with a HuJI unit operating out of the Pir Panjal Mountains in the Doda-Anantnag mountain belt. He was arrested from the village of Kapran in 2000, and served two years under the Public Safety Act until his detention was revoked just before the 2002 Assembly elections. After his release he went underground. In 2004, he was appointed ‘commander-in-chief’ of the HuJI in India.

The militants were reportedly taking shelter in a hut abandoned by farmers in the forest area. Seven other militants were also arrested from the hut. The slain militants have been identified as KLNLF area commander Mekrang Terong, Jarsom Terang and Son Millik. The arrested militants have revealed that they had taken shelter in the hut with the aim of extorting money from the businessmen and tea estate management along the Nagaon- Karbi Anglong border. Simultaneous raids on suspected hideouts in Mayang Imphal, Charoibung and Upokpi around 9.40pm led to the encounter. The two militants shot dead were identified as Sarangthem Sanjoy alias Robert and Elangbam Dutta. The police recovered an AK-47 rifle with nine rounds of ammunition and a pistol from their possession. The DGP stated that Robert was a "corporal" in the KYKL ranks, but had never been arrested. An arrested KYKL cadre, Laishram Homen alias Korou, is suspected to be one of those who planned the selective killings. The DGP also said the police were on the trail of four more KYKL members who killed five migrants in Imphal East district the day after the Heiyen Hangool attack. The KYKL, however, denied its involvement in the killings.

According to police sources, the HNLC and NLFT ran a joint camp at Wahlymbong for about two months to extort money from coal traders and businessmen of Jaintia Hills. The encounter took place when police personnel raided a militant hideout in Umkiang area following the arrest of 6 HNLC militants, including an 'area commander’ Syrpailin Mawlong alias Bhalang, and a courier Riskin Phawa, during a search operation in Malidor area and Umkiang village on March 26. Among the slain civilians were chief photographer of Daily Excelsior Ashok Sodhi, a prominent leader from Samba Hoshiar Singh and his wife, and another woman. 16 security force (SF) personnel, including the Superintendent of Police (Operations), Mubassir Latifi, and two women were injured in the day long gun-battle. Official sources said that two militants wearing Army uniform intruded into the house of Hoshiar Singh, general secretary of Indian National Democratic Party, in Samba town at 5.58am (IST) by scaling the boundary wall. After killing Hoshiar Singh and his wife on the spot, the militants subsequently moved towards the Kaili Mandi area and took hostage three women and two children. In the consequent encounter, two soldiers, Aziz Ahmed and Atul Negi, and a woman were killed. At about 5pm, the SFs stormed the house where the militants were hiding and shot dead both of them. Two AK-47 rifles, one rifle grenade launcher, some eatables, a wire cutter and a night vision device were recovered from their possession.

The slain couple was identified as Shabir Ahmed Ittu a.k.a. Abu Rizwan and Samreena Bano. One AK rifle with four magazines, 26 rounds, one pistol with one magazine, one Chinese grenade, one pouch and one mobile phone were recovered from the slain militants. Shabir Ahmed, according to sources, was an ‘A’ category militant active since 1995 and had recently been designated as ‘deputy divisional commander’ of the LeT. He was also involved in the Kulhand massacre of May 1, 2006 in which 22 Hindus were killed in the Udhampur district. Sources said Samreena Bano had joined the LeT a few months back. She was arrested on January 23, 2008 and had subsequently admitted to her involvement in militancy related activities. After being released on bail, she had again started working with the LeT outfit. Deputy Inspector General (Doda-Ramban range), Hemant Kumar Lohia told The Tribune that Samreena was an over ground worker and was under police surveillance.
