After securing information from the civilians regarding the abduction, security forces (SFs) launched a search operation in the Judi Bagda forest area where both civilians were being held captive. In the ensuing encounter, one of the civilians, Ayub, attempted to escape from captivity. However, he was shot dead by the terrorists. Later, the SF personnel killed one terrorist, Mohammed Saif of the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM) and also succeeded in rescuing the other civilian. Separately, one woman, Laitonjam Hemolata Devi, was captured and later paraded before the media by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) militants in the Imphal West district on December 12-evening, for her alleged supply of betel leaf. The PLA stated that restriction would be ‘imposed’ on her movement outside the house for three months. A PLA spokesman said that during the ‘interrogation’, Hemolata informed that at least 13 persons are selling and consuming tobacco products. The spokesman added that they should ‘surrender’ to the outfit within three days and the shops should remain closed for three months. Meanwhile, PLA militants set ablaze tobacco products ‘seized’ from four persons, Kangujam Sangeeta Devi , Ape Devi, Ningombam Sampha and Okram Thambou, who were also asked to surrender within three days.

On December 30, Meghalaya Police stated that Phersial Kongwang, the Khasi Students Union’s (KSU) Dawki Circle president, was abducted and later taken to Bangladesh by the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) militants, reports Shillong Times. "We have thoroughly investigated the matter. We have no doubt that HNLC men have taken the victim (Mr Kongwang) to Bangladesh," police said. Sentinel quoting police source reports that three persons, including the son of a Congress party leader, were abducted by the United Liberation Front of Barak Valley (ULFBV) militants armed with AK-47 rifles at Kharolbasti in the Hailakandi district along the Assam-Mizoram border on December 31. The abducted persons were identified as Hussein Ahmed, Abdul Noor and Abdul Khaliq. They were campaigning for Abdul Khaliq Laskar alias Kuti, a Congress candidate for the Baldabaldi panchayat (local self government) president post. Abdul Khaliq was later released on the same night with a note addressed to the candidate demanding INR 10 lakhs for the release of the duo.
