The News reports that law-enforcement agencies (LEAs) continued their search operation in Sui town to arrest those involved in shelling and firing on the gas installations from the hilly areas. Commandos took part in the operation, in which armoured vehicles were also used. Area sources said the LEAs personnel had encircled the whole area and everyone seen moving was being thoroughly frisked. Supply of gas and water also remained suspended in the town, but power supply continued with frequent interruptions.

23 Afghans were reportedly in Quetta, capital of Balochistan province, on January 27-night on suspicion of their links with the Taliban and Al Qaeda. The suspects, who included a former deputy governor and ex-police chief of Kabul, were arrested from three places in Quetta, said Balochistan Police chief, Mohammed Yaqub. He said the detainees had held "important positions during Taliban’s tenure" in Afghanistan, and "we suspect that some of them have close links with Al Qaeda." Police in the Sibi area arrested Field Manager of the Pakistan Petroleum Ltd, Pervez Majolah, Sui hospital Surgeon, Dr Osman Wada, Medical Officer, Muhammad Ali, and Dr Afzal Pasha following the cancellation of their pre-arrest bails by the Sibi sessions court in connection with the Dr Shazia gang rape case on January 28. Dr Shazia was allegedly gang-raped at a hospital in Sui. The arrests came three weeks after tribesmen, angry over the rape, fired hundreds of rockets, damaging a gas plant run near Sui and leading to the authorities dispatching thousands of troops to control the situation.

They were detained during recent police raids on the Marri camp and Killi Kambrani, Quetta, Kalat and Sibi districts, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Choudhury Yaqoob, told a press conference in the provincial capital Quetta on March 8. During interrogation, the IGP claimed, the suspects had confessed to their involvement in terrorist activities and revealed the presence of terrorist training camps in Kohlu district.

The police arrested three brothers, allegedly members of a banned religious organisation, in connection with the blast. Daily Times reports that on April 9 police arrested three people and seized a huge cache of weapons from them including hand grenades, kalashnikovs and pistols in Quetta. Superintendent of Police (CIA) Wazir Khan Nasir said the weapons had been used in bomb blasts and rocket firing incidents in the province. Among the weapons seized were 100 hand grenades, 204 explosive rods, 486 bullets, 97 rocket fuses, 4,400 kalashnikov bullets, three kalashnikovs, 15 kalashnikov magazines, two pistols, four pistol magazines, 26 remote control circuits, 48 hand grenade fuses and 300 detonators.

"Security forces had an encounter when they raided a house [at Sirki Road] in Quetta on Tuesday. They captured a foreigner and killed another and they may be Al Qaeda operatives," Information Minister Sheikh Rashid told AFP. "They are Arabs but their nationality is not yet known," Rashid added. Security agencies are reportedly trying to establish if one of the men is a wanted Syrian national, Mustafa Setmariam Nasar alias Abu Musab Al Suri, who has a bounty of $5 million. Nasar is an Al Qaeda trainer at terrorist camps in Afghanistan and an expert in using poisons and chemicals. He is allegedly also linked to the Madrid and London bombings.

At least three people were killed and 20 others, including two South African women, sustained injuries in a powerful car bomb explosion in front of the KFC restaurant. According to The News, the Karachi police have arrested more suspects, including one police personnel, on November 16 after establishing links of the blast to a militant group in Balochistan. The provincial police chief ordered his subordinates to hand over a policeman, a low-cadre official posted in the Anti-Car Lifting Cell in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town identified as Muhammad Usman. According to a press statement issued by the AIM, helicopter gunship took part in the "military operation" in the area and the scope of the operation is being expanded. The AIM claimed that several Marri tribesmen, including an employee family of Nawab Marri, had been arrested from Quetta, while some arrests had also been made from Sibi. Security forces, comprising some 100 vehicles, have also reached Sibi from Quetta to take part in what was termed a "military operation". The AIM claimed temporary airbases have been set up in Kohlu, Barkhan and Sibi for the military operation.
