According to media reports, on January 30, check posts of the Pakistani Rangers and two villages came under rocket attack on Sindh-Balochistan and Sindh-Punjab border areas. The reports stated that a group of armed persons attacked the check posts established to safeguard the Sui gas pipeline and two villages, Ghulam Hussain Mazari and Shah Dost Mazari. Fifteen rockets were reportedly fired out of which eight landed near the Rangers check posts, while seven landed near village Mazari. However, no casualties were reported in the incident.

At least 42 persons are reported to have died and more than 150 sustained injuries when a procession of the Shia sect was attacked by rival Sunni extremists at Liaquat Bazaar in Quetta, capital of Baluchistan, on March 2, observed as Youm-i-Ashur, the 10th day of Muharram (Annual Shia festival commemorating martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Mohammad). The British Broadcasting Service reported that homes, businesses and a mosque used by Sunni Muslims were set ablaze by rioters following the attack. Eyewitnesses said that as the Shia procession was passing through a busy shopping area in Quetta a grenade was thrown, followed by firing from automatic guns. "I was present near the procession when we first heard an explosion and then some people fired shots," said Quetta Mayor Abdul Rahim Kakar. At least five police personnel are amongst those reported dead. While the exact number of fatalities was unclear till last reports came in, some estimates put the figures higher and doctors in Quetta were quoted as saying in the media that the death toll could increase. No group has claimed responsibility for the massacre thus far.

Daily Times quoting Frontier Corps sources reports that unidentified people attacked two vehicles carrying paramilitary forces in Turbat, killing at least four personnel and injuring five more on December 24. "Four personnel of our forces were killed by a rocket while five others were hit by bullets when saboteurs attacked a patrolling party late on Friday night," said Frontier Corps Lieutenant Colonel Rizwan Malik. "Their vehicles were patrolling in the Newano area, about 650 kilometres west of Quetta, when hit by the rocket propelled grenade," he added. An anonymous caller identifying himself as Azad Baloch of the Baloch Liberation Army said that his group was responsible for the attack. The caller claimed 17 soldiers were killed in the attack and threatened to carry out more attacks. He also warned the army and the government not to set up new garrisons in Balochistan.

Police sources said the rocket was fired from five to six km away and hit a wall near the checkpoint. Capital City Police Officer, Pervez Rafi Bhatti, added that another explosion was heard from the same area at the same time, but there were no reports of any damage. Separately, a bomb exploded on the Adalat Road area in Quetta on December 27, but caused no damage to life or property.
