Police said a suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden vehicle into the bus carrying Shia pilgrims who were coming from Iran to Quetta. Syed Ahmed Mobeen, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Police said, "We have found the legs of suicide bomber from the spot".

At least 24 Shia pilgrims returning from Iran were killed and 40 others were injured in a bomb attack targeting their bus in the Khusak area of Kanak in Mastung District on January 21, reported Daily Times. Local Government official Shafqat Shahwani said that 51 passengers had been on board at the time of the blast and that nine passengers were still unaccounted for. Provincial Home Secretary Asad Gilani said that two buses with 103 pilgrims had been travelling together with security vehicles provided by the Government and that the bomb struck one of the buses. Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) claimed the responsibility for the attack.

According to the sources, the Security Forces (SFs) vehicle remained undamaged while glasses of nearby shops smashed as a result of the blast. An operation has been launched against militants. The decision to start the operation was taken in a high-level meeting held on the night of January 23, 2014.

Azad Baloch, a spokesman for Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) claiming responsibility for the attack said that 10 security personnel had been killed and 17 injured in the attack, but FC and Provincial Government sources denied the BLA claim.

Sibi Deputy Commissioner, Sohailur Rehman Baloch said it was an IED blast and refuted media reports that it was a suicide bombing. However, Dawn quoting Deputy Superintendent Police (DSP) Ali Nawaz reports that the boy was a suicide bomber who entered into the Sibi festival hall and blew himself up missing his intended target. "The strength of blast blew body pieces of suicide bomber into the air", the DSP said.
