In a late night attack on a security check post in Sarband area heavily armed militants opened fire with rocket propelled grenades and other heavy arms. “The Police and Frontier Corps (FC) were pushed back, but we are gearing up for a counter-operation,” Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations Tahir Ayub said, adding, that the attack was in reaction to an operation by SFs which had been launched in Bara-Badhaber area, bordering the Khyber Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on January 12. “We, along with the paramilitary forces, destroyed three of their important hideouts,” said the SSP, confirming the attack by 150 militants and nine injuries of SFs.

A ‘commander’ of Ansarul Islam (AI), identified as Haji Akhunzada, and three others, including his nephew and son-in-law, were killed in a suicide attack on January 30 in Pakha Ghulam area, on the outskirts of Peshawar, reported Express Tribune. Seven people were also injured, of whom five were reported in critical condition. “The attacker was between 20 and 25 years of age. He targeted Haji Akhunzada, a commander of the AI,” Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Tahir Ayub said. No group claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Peshawar Police pointed fingers at Lashkar-e-Islam (LI). According to Akhunzada’s son Khan Taj, the family had been living in the area for four months and had been receiving threats. “Earlier, my father had a narrow escape because he was helping the Government against LI,” Taj said, adding that earlier, LI members opened fire at Akhunzada’s vehicle in Hayatabad area in Peshawar.

Four persons were killed and several others injured in a car bomb attack on the house of a tribal elder in the Pishtakhara area of Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on February 3, reports Dawn. Cantonment Circle Superintendent of Police Dr Mian Saeed Ahmed said that about 40 kilograms of explosives had been packed in the car and detonated with remote control. He said that the main target was tribal elder Astana Gul but he was not there at the time of blast and his brother Ghazi Khan and his three friends died. He said that the deceased included an Army captain but it could not be ascertained if he was a serving officer or had retired. Astana Gul, who was once associated with the Khyber Agency (FATA)-based militant Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) outfit headed by the Mangal Bagh, joined its rival Ansar-ul-Islam and the blast appeared to be aimed at punishing him and warning for others against leaving Mangal Bagh’s outfit. The blast caused a wide crater near the building and damaged several other houses. LI claimed responsibility for the blast.
