A remote-controlled explosion occurred on January 13 in Sulemankhel area of Badbher area in Peshawar where the funeral prayer of slain Awami National Party (ANP) leader Mian Mushtaq Ahmed was scheduled to be held, leaving one Policeman injured, reported Dawn. According to the Police, security arrangements were being made for the funeral prayers of Mushtaq Ahmed. At least ten people were killed and more than 60 others were injured in the evening of January 16 when a bomb exploded at a Tablighi Markaz (religious centre) on Pajaggi Road in Peshawar (Peshawar District), the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, reports Dawn. Eyewitnesses said the bomb exploded at Tablighi Markaz run by the Tableeghi Jamaat, just before Maghrib (Evening) prayers. Around a thousand people were gathered at the seminary for a Shab-i-Juma (Thursday) congregation when the bomb ripped through the centre. Shafqat Malik, a senior official of the bomb disposal squad, said the bomb was planted inside a canister of ghee (cooking oil). “Around five kilograms of explosive material was used in the blast, which was detonated through a timed device,” he said. Two more bombs diffused at blast site by the bomb disposal squad by applying water charge.

A bomb explosion killed at least one Policeman and wounded another during a vaccination campaign for polio and other diseases in the Budhni area on the outskirts of Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on February 16, reports The Express Tribune. “The police team was being deployed in Budhni area before the start of the campaign when a remote controlled bomb exploded near their van, killing one police official and wounding another one,” local senior administration official Zaheerul Islam said. According to the World Health Organisation, Pakistan recorded 91 cases of polio last year, up from 58 in 2012. The World Health Organisation has warned that Peshawar was the world’s “largest reservoir” of polio.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP-city) Banaras Khan said the blast appeared to have targeted Police mobile van and was carried out by a suicide bomber. Superintendent of Police Faisal Kamran said that due to the sensitive nature of the area, which is situated on the border of the tribal areas, Police personnel were using armoured personnel carriers (APC) to conduct routine patrolling when they were targeted by the suicide bomber who was on foot. According to Shafqat Malik, Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS), at least eight kilograms of explosives were used in the blast. The bomber was believed to have been targeting a group of refugees from Tirah Valley who had gone to a government-run camp in the Arbab Niaz Stadium to fill out paperwork ahead of their journey home. The suicide bomber first opened fire at the Police guarding the registration point for the IDPs from Tirah Valley before blowing himself up. “It was a suicide attack,” Police official Najeebur Rehman said adding that around 10 kilograms of explosives were used. Senior Police official Faisal Mukhtar said the bomber blew himself up near a small mosque inside the stadium and the dead included one Khasadar (Tribal Policeman) personnel. The blast caused one of mosque’s walls to fall down.
