The Rangers said on January 4 that they had arrested three terrorists of the outlawed Sunni group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) who were involved in sectarian killings, according to The News. They were arrested on a tip-off from the Korangi Industrial Area, Col Qamar Abbas Kiyani, Commandant, Bhittai Rangers, said at a press briefing in Karachi. The arrested men were identified as Maqsood Ahmed Qureshi alias Abbas alias Faisal, Azhar-ul-Haq alias Tariq and Nawaz Khan alias Shosha. A large quantity of explosives, detonators, a Kalashnikov and three TT pistols were recovered from them, disclosed Kiyani. He said Maqsood, who had been a close associate of LeJ leaders, Riaz Basra, Akram Lahori and Asif Chotoo, took part in many terrorist activities and then established his own network.

The authorities in Karachi detained two top leaders of banned Sunni outfit Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP) on February 21 in a bid to contain the wave of protests in the city, according to Daily Times. Police in North Karachi surrounded the house of Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Nadeem, a frontline SSP leader, and informed him that he could not go outside. Similar action was taken by the Landhi police that cordoned off the house of Maulana Aurangzeb Farooqi, another senior SSP leader, and advised him to stay indoors until further orders.

The Karachi Police arrested Mohammed Junaid, allegedly the ‘operations chief’ of Harkat-ul-Mujahideen Al-Almi (HuMA), on April 3 after a gun battle, said senior police official Raja Omar Khitab. Police launched a raid as Junaid and an accomplice were shifting weapons from a hideout in the city, according to Daily Times. The two allegedly opened fire targeting the police, before Junaid was arrested while his accomplice escaped. Police recovered one AK-47 assault rifle, two grenades and a pistol from their possession. Khitab informed that Junaid was wanted in connection with several attacks on the police and a 2003 bombing at a private club in Karachi that injured nine people. The Government had offered a reward of Rs 500,000 for information leading to his arrest.

The police have detained 12 suspected terrorists in connection with the April 11-suicide bombing at Nishtar Park in Karachi, Sindh Inspector General of Police, Jahangir Mirza, told reporters on April 16, according to Daily Times. "The suspects are being interrogated and I am hopeful that we are close to a breakthrough," said Mirza. Six cadres of the outlawed Sunni group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), believed to be involved in the killing of doctors to fan sectarian violence, have been arrested, Karachi Police claimed on May 5. According to a press release issued by the office of the Capital City Police Officer, they arrested six suspects involved in acts of sectarian target killings after an encounter in the jurisdiction of Malir City police. Farooq Awan of the Karachi Police told The News that the six belonged to the Lahori group of LeJ, who were suspected of killing doctors both of Sunni and Shia sects in the metropolis from 1994 to 2003 in a bid to fan sectarian violence.

City police chief Niaz Ahmed Siddiqui described the seizure as the biggest cache of explosive material recovered by the Karachi police yet. He said two people were arrested in this connection and 425 kg of explosive material comprising sodium nitrate, potassium, six fuses used in bombs, and 55,000 feet of safety fuse wire were seized.

Police arrested a suspected Islamist terrorist accused of training religious students to become suicide bombers, according to Reuters. Senior police official Chaudhry Aamir Hameed said the suspected man, Mohammad Ashraf Qureshi, was arrested along with two other men during a raid in Karachi. “He has been targeting young boys in madrassas, brain washing them and turning them into suicide bombers,” said Hameed, adding that Qureshi was also involved in the training of the suicide bombers who killed prominent Shia cleric Allama Hassan Turabi in Karachi in July 2006. Police identified the suicide bomber who killed Turabi as 16-year-old Abdul Karim.

An intelligence agency has handed over six suspects, belonging to the proscribed Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), to police in connection with the March 2, 2006-suicide attack outside the US consulate in Karachi, according to Dawn. “We have made progress in the US consulate suicide blast case and arrested six suspects,” said an unnamed police official. Four people, including an American diplomat, were killed and 17 others injured when a car bomb exploded near the US consulate in Karachi on the morning of March 2.

Four people were reportedly arrested on August 21 from Karachi for alleged involvement in terrorist plots in the country. Two suspected militants, Anwarul Haq and Usman Ghani, were arrested for their alleged involvement in a suicide attack on the US consulate on March 2 that killed US diplomat David Foy, his driver Iftikhar Ahmed, Rangers official Zafar and security guard Hasan Shehzad, according to Daily Times. Addressing a press conference, Sindh Inspector General of Police, Jehangir Mirza, said the suicide bomber had been identified earlier as Raja Mohammed Tahir. Mirza added that the mastermind of the plot, Qari Zafar, was still at large.

According to Daily Times, mobs protesting the killing of Nawab Akbar Bugti cut off the main highway connecting Quetta, capital of Balochistan province, to Karachi at four points and another heading west to Iran on August 30 as the number of arrests in four days rose to nearly 700. About 200 people blocking a bridge with trucks on the highway to Karachi lifted their siege after eight hours following talks between protest leaders and Government officials. Boulders and crudely erected barricades reportedly blocked another road linking Karachi with Gwadar. The blockades prevented many workers from entering Quetta, forcing markets, banks and shops to close. Dozens of buses were parked at a terminal in Quetta unable to leave for Karachi and Lahore.

Two paramilitary personnel were killed and several people injured during the general strike observed by the combined opposition against the Government on various issues, particularly the killing of Baloch leader Nawab Akbar Bugti. Two personnel of the Pakistan Rangers were reportedly shot dead and a police personnel were wounded in separate incidents in Karachi. Reports further indicated that a complete shutdown was observed in most parts of the Balochistan, Sindh and North West Frontier Province. Several shops and Government buildings were set ablaze and attacked during demonstrations. Over 100 people were arrested in the country, most of them in Balochistan, following clashes between the police and protesters.
