Security Forces (SFs) shot dead five suspected al Qaeda linked militants who had tried to carry out a suicide bombing in south western city of Quetta on May 17, reports Times of India. They were killed in gunfight near a paramilitary check post in Quetta. It was reported that the would-be bombers included three women and were believed to be foreigners. "From the appearance of the attackers, it looked they were either Uzbek or Chechens," a senior security official said, adding, "They had hand grenades and bombs strapped to their bodies." If the attack had been carried out, it would have been the second targeting Pakistan's military since al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was killed in a United States (US) raid on May 1. A Police official said at least one of the attackers blew himself up before being shot. No SFs were killed, the officials added.

A senior Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ‘commander’, Shakir, who helped train and deploy suicide bombers was shot dead by unidentified assailants at the Qutab Khel area on Bannu- Miranshah road near Miranshah, the headquarter of North Waziristan Agency, in Federally Administered Tribal Agency at around 4:00 pm on June 28, reports The Express Tribune. Sources said that Shakir, a resident of South Waziristan, was riding a motorcycle when unidentified assailants in a vehicle with tinted windows sprayed bullets on him. Shakir was a close aide of TTP’s chief trainer of suicide bombers Qari Hussain and had also served as his spokesperson for some time. Fidayeen-e-Islam, a branch within the TTP, was responsible for training of suicide bombers and was headed by Qari Hussain, famously known as 'Ustad-e-Fedayeen'. According to the Associated Press, Shakir once claimed to a local newspaper that his group had trained more than 1,000 suicide bombers at camps in North Waziristan. Shakir’s name hit headlines last month for issuing threats to Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry. He had reportedly threatened the CJP with ‘dire consequences’ if he accepted the conviction of the TTP activists who were awarded death sentence by the Lahore High Court for attacking former President Pervez Musharraf.

On July 5, 10 people were shot dead and nearly 24 others were wounded in firing in Orangi town. Firing broke out shortly after aasilaints opened fire at the Awami National Party’s (ANP) Rahim Khan Swati in Qasba Colony, critically injuring him. Orangi Superintendent of Police (SP) Khurram Waris said that six people were killed and about 10 were injured. He claimed to have arrested two suspects each from the ANP and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and said more arrests were under way. “It’s nothing. There is nothing to worry about,” he said when he was asked about the situation. “It’s just an [ethno-linguistic] scuffle and the people who died are also [from the two ethno-linguistic groups]. A few are affiliated with political parties,” he added. However, ANP Sindh spokesperson Qadir Khan demanded the Government to take action against the assailants attacking Pashto-speaking people. He said that according to initial reports, four ANP activists have been killed and at least six were injured. He said that more killings were expected and the details were being gathered. “They are picking our men off one by one,” he said. Meanwhile, according to a statement, MQM chief Altaf Hussain said that the citizens of Karachi were being punished as the MQM had left the Government and joined the ranks of the opposition in Sindh.
