The armed squad of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) killed one youth for allegedly being ‘Police informer’ and also collecting levy in favour of Maoists at Pipradih village under Gomia Police Station in Bokaro District late on April 8, reports The Pioneer. The deceased has been identified as Satendra Mandal (26) of Pipradih village. A former sarpanch (local-self government institution head), was killed by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres in Bijapur District on April 23, reports The Hindu. The Maoists slit the throat of Elam Narayan, the former sarpanch of Vadala village under Bhopalpatnam block of Bijapur and also left a handwritten letter on his dead body claiming the responsibility of the killing. “We had already warned Elam Narayan thrice during various Janatana Adalat (peoples’ court) but he continued to indulge in troubling common public, exploiting and threatening them. He did not give up his dictatorial ways despite repeated warning from the party,” said the handwritten letter issued in the name of National Park Area Committee of the CPI-Maoist. Elam Narayan was reportedly a member of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). “Our party will never spare BJP men like Elam Narayan who trouble common public,” threatened the Maoists' letter and also asked other BJP members in the area to quit the party or “face the consequences.”

Unidentified assailants hacked a Hindu man, identified as Nikhil Joardar (50), to death at his tailoring shop in Dubail area under Gopalpur upazila in Tangail District on April 30, The Daily Star. The motive is not yet clear, but the machete attack resembles the recent spate of targeted attacks that saw secular bloggers, writers and people of different faiths and ideologies killed over the last few years. Hours after the incident, global terror outfit Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the killing, United States (US)-based SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors terrorist activities globally, said in a post. However, the authenticity of the claim could not be independently verified.According to Police and local sources, two to three assailants, who came on a bike, took part in the killing around 12:30pm. They swooped on Nikhil, father of two daughters, and hacked him indiscriminately, leaving him dead on the spot, said Aslam Khan, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) (Gopalpur circle) in Tangail. In 2012, Nikhil was in jail for several weeks on charges of making derogatory comments about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), said Abdul Jalil, officer-in-charge of Gopalpur Police Station. This could be a possible motive behind his murder, Police sources said.

Suspecting three villagers to be acting as ‘Police informers’, cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) abducted them from their home on October 1, took them to the forest and later slit their throats in Kanker District of Bastar division, reports The Times of India. A group of nearly 20-25 armed Maoists entered Hurrapinjori village in Amabeda region and knocked on the doors of three tribal villagers. The rebels dragged them out of the house, thrashed and kicked them and took them to neighbouring village while the families pleaded Maoists to show mercy. Later, in the morning, the bodies of three villagers were found with their throats slit on the road and locals informed the Police. Superintendent of Police (SP) of Kanker, ML Motwani said that the three innocent tribals were killed as they were suspected to be ‘Police informers’. They were identified as Jain Kumar (22), Anturam Hurra (24) and Manakram Hurra (24). According to the statement given by locals, the rebels who led the group of Maoists were ‘divisional committee member’ Ramesh and Charagaon LOS (local organisation squad) ‘commander’ Sonu.
