The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Member of Parliament (MP) K. Siwaneshan, representing the Jaffna district was killed in an explosion in the Kanagarayankulam area on the Mankulam-Mallavi road of Kilinochchi district on March 6-afternoon, reports Sri Lanka Army. The pro- Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) Website Tamil Net, however, alleged that K. Siwaneshan was killed in a claymore mine attack carried out by the Sri Lanka Army’s Deep Penetration Unit on A-9 road, 30-minutes after he crossed into Vanni through Oamanthai / Puliyangkulam entry point on March 6. His driver was also killed in the attack. The military, however, said no operations were being carried out there at that time, adds The Hindu. “If the reports given by LTTE propaganda elements are correct, the location of the bomb blast is at least 25 km in the LTTE dominated area from our last [security forces’] bastion at Omanthai. How can we expect anyone, even a well trained commando group to enjoy a cakewalk that far on the heavily guarded A-9 road?” the defence ministry quoted an unnamed official as saying. Three of the TNA's 22 MPs have been killed since fighting between the government and the LTTE resumed in 2005. Joseph Pararajasingham, a representative for the eastern Batticaloa district was killed while attending a 2005 Christmas mass. His colleague, Nadarajah Raviraj, was killed in the capital, Colombo, in November 2006. The TNA blamed those two killings on government-backed paramilitary groups, a charge the authorities denied.

Unidentified gunmen fired shots at Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani’s motorcade in a high security zone on the Islamabad Highway on September 3, Daily Times reported. Rawalpindi City Police Officer Rao Muhammad Iqbal said the motorcade was on its way to the airport to pick the prime minister. "The [prime minister’s] car was going towards the airport when it was fired upon from a small hill… Two bullets hit the driver’s window." "The prime minister and his staff were not in the car," Interior Secretary Syed Kamal Shah said. A statement by the Prime Minister’s House said two of a number of sniper shots fired on the prime minister’s vehicle hit the window on the driver’s side. "However, because of the robust and comprehensive security measures, the prime minister and all the members of his motorcade remained unharmed," the statement said. Police said more than 20 suspects had been arrested and were being questioned. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack. Talking to Reuters, a TTP spokesman said Prime Minister Gilani was attacked because he was responsible for the ongoing offensives against militants in the northwest of Pakistan.
