A Sarpanch (head of Gram Panchayat, village level local self-government institution) of Mankeli village in Bijapur District, identified as Budhram (45), was allegedly stabbed to death by Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres in Nayapara locality of Bijapur District headquarter on January 2, reports daily.bhaskar.com. According to Police, a group of four Maoists, dressed in school uniforms, attacked Budharam when he was taking a walk outside his house in Bijapur town. Budhram had shifted to Bijapur from Mankeli after Salwa Judum (anti-Maoist vigilante group), a movement aimed at countering Maoists in the region, was started there.

Unidentified assailants attacked Maulana Haseebullah Madni, a leader of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Sami-ul-Haq (JUI-S), a religio-political party near Gillani Railway Station in Block 13-D/2 of Gulshan-e-Iqbal in Karachi (Karachi District), the provincial capital of Sindh, injuring him and eight others and killing his security guard, reports The News. While the assailants were firing on the JUI-S leader’s car, a private school’s van carrying children was passing nearby and its driver, Imdad, was struck by a bullet. The driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed it into a wall. Five children, aged between five and 10 years, suffered injuries. Police said that it was the third attack on Madni, adds Daily Times. Gulshan-e-Iqbal Station House Officer (SHO) Rana Haseeb told The News that the assailants had used Kalashnikovs and 9mm pistols. “Police found over 70 empty bullet shells at the scene,” he added.

As reported earlier, militants had shot dead Sarpanch (head of village Panchayat) Habibullah Mir in Sopore on January 11. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti narrowly escaped a suicide attack on his motorcade at Mardan College Chowk in Mardan Town of same District on February 15, reports Dawn. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Khalid Khan said that a suicide bomber aged about 23 years attacked the motorcade on the busy Mardan College Chowk when it was on its way to Mardan-i-Khas locality where Mr Hoti was to address a public meeting. The legs and hands of the bomber had been found at the site of the blast and a head outside a nearby building, DSP Khalid Khan added. The Chief Minister appeared to be the target of the bomber but because of strict security measures he could not reach the venue of the public meeting. He said only the bomber, and no-one else, was hurt, he added further.

The incident took place while the legislator was heading for his home town from Shillong and was passing through Rongmil village near Dainadubi on NH-62 at around 11:30 pm. Sources informed that as soon as the legislator and his convoy reached Rongmil village, three armed militants in camouflage ambushed them by opening fire. There was an exchange of fire between the two security personnel assigned to the legislator and the militants for some time, before the three militants fled the scene. However, there were no casualties in the incident.

A 10-vehicle convoy including the MLA, Autonomous District Council (ADC) Member, Horyaola Vashum and security escorts were reportedly returning from Talui (Tolloi) after attending an ADC Handloom Mela when the attack was launched. After spot inquiry of the incident, Officer in-charge of Ukhrul Police station, P Longpinao told media persons that an IED was exploded by unknown persons, who also fired a shot towards the convoy. This is the second time in recent years that an MLA from Ukhrul District has come under attack from militants. On April 15, 2011, the late MLA from Phungyar Assembly Constituency, Wungnaoshang Keishing was ambushed near New Canaan village under Litan Police Station. According to details, the first bomb exploded at around 8:50pm near the MQM Unit-153 office in Azizabad Block-8. MQM workers were present at party office at the time of blast, which injured several people. Following the first blast, MQM’s supporters, rescue workers and law enforcers rushed to the crime scene and were busy shifting the injured to the hospital when, at around 9:10pm, the second and more intensive blast occurred. The second blast turned out to be more lethal in terms of casualties, as many party workers, children, journalists, rescue workers, and personnel of law enforcement agencies were injured in the follow-up blast. The victims were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, Sindh Government Hospital and other private hospitals for treatment. Doctors said that three of the injured were death, while more than 30 injured were admitted for treatment. The condition of 15 of the victims was critical, Doctors added. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ‘spokesman’ Ehsanullah Ehsan has reportedly claimed responsibility for the blasts.

There were conflicting reports about the nature of the explosion as some said a suicide bomber blew himself up when Munir Orakzai was about to leave the venue after delivering his speech. However, his family members insisted that unidentified people had planted an improvised explosive device (IED) in the seminary where the election rally had been organised. Kurram Agency Political Agent Riaz Mehsud said that the blast was caused by an IED. He added that 10 kilograms explosives were used in the blast.

The Police officer added that Dervesh was receiving threats from extortionists and he had lodged a number of complaints with the Police. “The extortionists had attacked his showroom with grenades several times in the last few months.” An ANP official said that TTP militants who were operating in the area were trying to extort money from Lal Dervesh, who was the former President of the ANP Frontier Colony Ward. A special meeting of the KP cabinet, headed by Chief Minister Pervez Khattak, approved the establishment of an anti-terrorism task force which will be led by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and comprise members of all law enforcement and intelligence agencies including Army, Frontier Corps and Frontier Constabulary. The cabinet has also demanded of the federal Government to return the Frontier Constabulary's platoons back to the province so that they can be deployed at sensitive places for controlling law and order and fighting terrorism. Five low intensity blasts occurred on the outer periphery of the Gandhi Maidan, Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami said in Delhi. One bomb went off before the Eliphistine cinema hall on the western side of the rally venue, Police said. Hours before the multiple explosions, a crude bomb went off in a newly constructed toilet at the Patna railway station, two kilometres from the BJP's 'Hunkar rally' venue. Bomb disposal swept the area and recovered two more crude bombs, Railway Superintendent of Police Upendra Kumar Sinha said. One security personnel was injured while defusing a bomb recovered from the toilet, he said. Meanwhile, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs R P N Singh said, "I can't say whether it was a terror attack or political conspiracy. Only after the investigation, we will be able to tell anything."
