President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on August 3, summoned the new Parliament to meet on August 20, 2020 following the General Election on August 5, reports Colombo Page. President’s Media Division announced that the Extraordinary Gazette notification announcing the summoning of the new Parliament was issued last night. The President has made this decision under the powers vested in him by the Constitution of Sri Lanka and the Parliamentary Election Act. President Rajapaksa dissolved the eight Parliament with effect from midnight of March 2 fixing the date for the Election of Members of Parliament to be the April 25 and fixing the date for the new Parliament to meet to be the May 14. However, consequent to Covid-19 Pandemic, the Election Commission by Gazette Notification on June 10 notified that the Election for electing the Members of Parliament will be held on August 5.
