Trincomalee District Member of Parliament (MP) R. Sampanthan has requested Prime Minister (PM) Mahinda Rajapaksa not to appoint a non-Tamil speaking officer as Jaffna District Secretary, reports Daily News on July 27. Sampathan in a letter to the PMhas said that 95 per cent of the population in Jaffna is Tamil speaking and all MPs who were elected to parliament from the North and East are Tamil speaking.“In the circumstances, posting a Non-Tamil speaking public official as the District Secretary/ Government Agent to Jaffna district will seem inappropriate. It would also be undemocratic… Moreover, when the government is contemplating the enactment of a new Constitution, restructuring powers of governance enabling the maximum possible devolution in the area of historical habitation of the Tamil speaking people in the North East.Such a step will be counter-productive and not welcomed by the people,” the letter said.
