Voting for the 2020 General Election that commenced at 7.00 am on August 5, ended peacefully at 5.00 pm amid anti-coronavirus measures, reports Colombo Page. The election was held in accordance with health guidelines due to the Covid-19 pandemic. A total of 16,263,885 registered voters were eligible to cast their vote at 12,885 polling centers island-wide to elect 196 members to the parliament. A total of 7,452 candidates representing 40 political parties and 313 independent groups contested the election. The Election Commission (EC) said overall about 71 percent of eligible voters has cast their ballots island wide. Meanwhile, the Police said the election was held very peacefully.
