Two homemade bombs exploded near the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) headquarters in the Dhaka's Nayapaltan area on May 1, reports The Independent. No injuries were reported in the explosions. Police blamed the activists of Jatiyatabadi Swechhasebak Dal, the volunteer wing of the BNP, for the blasts. Deputy Police Commissioner Anwar Hossain told that the Jatiyatabadi Swechhasebak Dal activists were gathering there to bring out a procession. As the security officials approached, they exploded the bombs to escape through narrow alleys.

The arrestees were, identified as Shyamnagar sub-district unit secretary Imran Hossain, Debahata unit office secretary Abdul Karim and Kaliganj unit office secretary Aminur Rahman. The Police raided the ICS office and arrested the trio while they were holding a secret meeting to create anarchy in the District.

Five cadres of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), were arrested on charge of vandalising billboards and tearing Awami League (AL) posters in the Noakhali District town on May 13, reports The Daily Star. The arrestees include Abdullah-Al-Masud, secretary of ICS municipal unit, and Fakrul Islam, president of ICS Begumganj sub-District. The Police have pressed charges against five cadres of the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) for the ‘killing’ of Humayun Azad, a Dhaka University professor and renowned writer, reports The New Age. The inspector of Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Mohammad Lutfor Rahman, submitted two charge sheets to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on May 13, claiming that the February 27, 2004 attack on Azad had ultimately caused his death. The charge sheets were supplementary ones as the previous ones were for the 'attempt-to-murder' charges while the new ones have linked ‘murder’ under the Explosives Act.

War crimes tribunal of Bangladesh has indicted Ghulam Azam, founder of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) in former East Pakistan, on charges of incitement, conspiracy, planning, murder, abetment and failure to prevent crimes against humanity during the country's liberation war in 1971. The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT) framed the charges on May 13 and fixed June 5 for starting the trial of Azam, who is considered the guru of JeI, which took up arms to defend Pakistan alongside the Pakistani army in the Bangladesh war in 1971.

The recent busting of the various modules of the Indian Mujahideen (IM) in those areas has also added to the problem for the HuJI-B as there appears to be a lot of scrutiny of the activities on the border. Hence, the HuJI –B decided to change its game plan and has decided to recruit women and also train them in order to carry out terror activities in India. The HuJI already has a lot of camps in India. In addition to this it has a dedicated set of touts who help ferry across their cadres between Bangladesh and India.

Twenty-four AL leaders and workers were killed and 300 others were injured in the grenade attack on the AL rally at Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital on August 21, 2004. The attack was aimed at assassinating AL President Sheikh Hasina, then leader of the opposition. Hasina narrowly escaped death. Two cases -- one under the explosive substances act and the other for murder -- were filed after the incident.
