Hefajat Islamists gathered at Motijheel area of Dhaka city gave the government three weeks’ time to meet their demands, which include a law allowing for the death penalty for maligning Islam and stern punishment to those they call atheist bloggers. Otherwise, they threatened, they would lay siege to the capital on May 5, 2013. “We will cut off Dhaka from the rest of the country on May 5 if our demands are not fulfilled,” Junayed Babu Nagari, secretary general of the Hefajat, said. Besides, they will hold rallies in Districts of Chittagong, Sylhet, Khulna, Barisal, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Brahmanbaria, Faridpur and Bogra between April 11 and April 30.

Stray incidents of violence marked a countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal (general shut down) enforced by Hefejat-e-Islam on April 8, reports New Age. In Dhaka city, the Islamists clashed with Police and ruling party Awami League (AL) activists that left at least 50 injured. In Chittagong District, at least 40 people were injured in a series of violent clashes between the activists of Hefajat-e-Islam and ruling party. In Mymensingh District, 40 people were injured in fierce clashes between the activists of AL and Hefajat-e-Islam. In Gazipur District, at least 20 Hefajat-e-Islam cadres were injured in clashes with Juba League and Chhatra League activists of AL. The ruling party activists handed over at least 15 Hefajat-e-Islam cadres to Police after beating them up. In Naraynagnj District, at least six people were injured in clashes between Hefajat-e-Islam and Police backed by AL activists. Hefajat-e-Islam cadres torched a bus while the Police arrested two of them. In Jessore District, at least three madrassah students and a mason were wounded in separate clashes with Juba League activists at Nawapara industrial town. In Sirajganj District, Hefajat-e-Islam cadres vandalised a truck on Bogra-Nagarbari highway leaving its driver and his assistant injured.

He made the plea at meeting he had with editors and media personalities for exchanging views at Dhaka Club. He also called upon the Government and the political parties to shun the path of politics of confrontation. The FBCCI chief also requested the Government to consider the reasonable demands of the opposition. He urged the political parties to find an alternative to hartal to voice their demands.

In Dhaka city, cadres of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) the student wing of BNP and Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) brought out processions in support of the hartal and exploded 19 homemade bombs creating panic in the city. Police fired blank shots to bring the situation under control. In Noagaon District, at least 25 people were injured in a triangular clash between law enforcers, BNP and AL activists at Prosadpur Bazar. In Dinajpur District, 12 persons including five Policemen were injured as BNP men clashed with Police in the morning. Police arrested six JCD-ICS cadres. In Narayanganj District, five persons were injured during a clash between hartal supporters and Police in the morning. In Gazipur District, a journalist and four others were injured in a clash between Police and hartal supporters in front of Hossain Market. In Bogra District, JCD cadres exploded 10 homemade bombs in different parts of the District town. The hartal supporters also set fire to tyres on the highway. Police rushed in and doused the fires.

The daylong hartal called by the Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), the students’ wing of JeI, was observed on April 11 amid stray incidents of violence in different parts of the country, reports The Independent. One JeI-ICS cadre identified as Mansoor Ali (50) was killed and over 50 people were injured when the Police fired bullets during a clash with JeI-ICS cadres at Chechuri village under Dumiria sub-District in Khulna District. The clash ensued when the Police tried to disperse JeI-ICS cadres who had blockaded a road in the village by burning tyres and logs. In Dhaka city, ICS cadres brought out several violent processions and involved in a clash with the Police. Two Policemen and two ICS cadres were injured during the clashes. Eight homemade bombs were also exploded sparking panic among the locals. The Police arrested 30 ICS cadres in connection with the arson from the city. In Sathkhira District, two people were injured in an attack carried out by JeI-ICS cadres. Union president Habibar Rahman of the AL and local AL activist Abdul Karim Sardar were injured. In Feni District, ICS cadres vandalised a truck and a few other vehicles, and exploded at least 20 homemade bombs. In Comilla District, ICS cadres exploded four homemade bombs. The Police arrested four ICS cadres while they were organising a picket. In Khulna District, ICS cadres vandalised eight or nine vehicles and blocked the Khulna-Jessore Highway with logs. Two homemade bombs were exploded there. In Bogra District, ICS cadres blocked the Dhaka-Bogra highway. They also staged a demonstration there and set tyres ablaze. In Dhaka city, five people were injured as pickets exploded crude bombs frequently in different points in the city. The Police arrested 19 pickets on charge vandalism and explosion. In Rajshahi District, five activists of the BNP, including the District BNP president Nadim Mostafa, were injured as the Police fired rubber bullets into a procession of pickets. In Jessore District, at least 10 people, including three Policemen, were injured in a clash with pickets at Jessore–Magura Highway. The Police fired rubber bullets to disperse the pickets. In Lalmonirhat District, pickets assault two physicians for riding motorcycle during strike in the District town. A case was filed in this connection against 15 people with the Lalmonirhat Police about midday. None was arrested.

On April 23 (today), five cadres of ICS were arrested in Dhaka city’s Adabar and Dhaka University campus. During a drive at a house in Adabar area, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Mobarak Hossain, education secretary of ICS, and Russell Ahmed, ICS Central Committee member, with computers and books and CDs on jihad. The two are accused in various cases filed with different Police stations. Meanwhile, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of Awami League (AL) detained three Dhaka University students at Bangabandhu Hall on the campus, suspecting them as ICS cadres and handed over to Police. The detainees were identified as Abu Saleh, Nazmul Ahmed and Saidur Rahman.
