In another incident, the main opposition BNP at a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka city on October 3 urged the Government to halt the execution of death sentence awarded to its lawmaker Salauddin Quader Chowdhury until an investigation going on into the leakage of the verdict ends, reports The Daily Star. The party’s standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia said “There is no way to execute the verdict since the investigation is still going on.” BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alleged there are many in inconsistencies in the verdict and hoped that Chowdhury would get justice form higher court. He also said that SQ Chowdhury trial was part of the Government’s well-thought-out plan to eliminate its political opponents.

Separately, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at a meeting to exchange views with the party’s grassroots leaders at her official residence Ganobhaban in Dhaka city on October 3 said that her Government would be able to complete the trials of war criminals, like the trial of the Bangabandhu killing case, in order to make the nation free from stigma, reports The Independent. She asserted “I believe that we will be able to complete trials of war criminals who committed crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971 so as to free the nation from stigma. The BNP cannot save them.” Accusing the BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia of siding with war criminals, Hasina alleged that BNP- Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) activists have been killing people, setting them on fire, in order to save war criminals. Calling one hartal (general strike) after another, the BNP-JeI combine is carrying out vandalism across the country only to save war criminals.

Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Police on October 4 said that two tribunal staff, an assistant to a defence lawyer and several others were involved in leaking the draft verdict in the war crimes trial of BNP lawmaker SQ Chowdhury, reports The Daily Star. The investigators suspect that some aides to the BNP leader masterminded the leak to undermine the tribunal as well as its verdict and bribed the employees — office assistant Fakhrul Hossain and cleaner Nayon Ali — to smuggle out the document. They said that Mehedi Hasan, assistant to SQ Chowdhury’s counsel Fakhrul Islam, might have emailed the draft to the UK from where it was posted on websites. Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam of Dhaka Metropolitan Police said that the cleaner had confessed to the crime. Fakhrul Hossain had asked Nayon to give Mehedi “some documents” related to SQ Chowdhury’s trial from the tribunal’s computers. Nayon handed over Mehedi the soft copies of 165-page document in phases using pen drives. He at one stage had refused to do the task. However, he had to continue as Mehdi and Fakhrul threatened to put him in trouble.

Separately, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina while addressing her party’s grassroots leaders at her Gono Bhaban residence in Dhaka city on October 9 apprehended that pro-liberation forces would be wiped out and a dangerous situation would prevail in the country if “BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI)-Hefajat-e-Islam (HeI)” came to power through the next parliamentary election, reports The Daily Star. Referring to October 7’s bomb blast in a madrasa founded by a HeI leader in Chittagong District’s Lalkhan Bazaar, she said, “The BNP chairperson has been dreaming to come to power with Hefajat and anti-liberation Jamaat-Shibir. You have seen how much bombs and ammunition were being made in that madrasa. If those had not exploded, none would have known about it. The explosion might be a sign from Allah. So what answer will the BNP chairperson give to the nation? That she wants to do these kinds of criminal acts? That she wants to patronise them? That she wants to capture state power with them? These mean that she wants to turn the country into that of militancy, terrorism and conflict again if she returns to power.”

Meanwhile, a sense of unease is growing over the political situation as both the ruling AL and its archrival BNP are organizing a show of strength in Dhaka city on October 25, reports The Daily Star on October 12 (today). The AL has decided to hold a rally in front of its central office on Bangabandhu Avenue on October 25 to highlight Government’s successes and seek public mandate in the next parliamentary polls. BNP have also announced that the same day they will stage a rally to press for the restoration of a non-party Caretaker Government (CG) to oversee the next general polls. But the party is yet to get permission for holding the rally in Suhrawardy Udyan or Paltan. The BNP sources said if it does not get the permission, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia might announce a seven-day nonstop hartal from October 26. AL Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif said if the BNP holds a peaceful rally; the Government would rather help the party. If the BNP tries to create any chaos, the law enforcers will take action.
