Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) on February 1 arrested three Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants, identified as Mohammad Jabbar (kingpin of the module), Majid Dar and Zohaib Khan, from unspecified locations in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and neutralised a LeT module tasked with carrying out blasts in crowded places and to target security vehicles in J&K, reports Daily Excelsior. Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Rajouri, Haseeb Mughal said the module was neutralised after an investigation was launched following the recovery of sophisticated Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in the District on January 8 and 18. Officials also reported the recovery of two more IEDs on the basis of disclosures made by them, which were meant to be smuggled across the border and used to detonate explosions at vulnerable locations in an attempt to create chaos and challenge government order.

On February 2, Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) arrested a Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant, identified as, Mohammad Auraf Sheikh alias Arif, from Reasi District in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), for carrying out multiple blasts in J&K, reports Daily Excelsior. An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted inside a perfume bottle was recovered from his possession. Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh stated that arrested accused used to get IEDs and sticky bombs from the International Border (IB) in Jammu, Samba and Kathua Districts in J&K where they were drone-dropped by LeT operatives from Pakistan at the behest of LeT ‘commander’ Mohammad Qasim. He has accepted his involvement in the bombing of the bus on May 13, 2022, IED explosion in February 2022 and the twin explosions at Narwal in Jammu District in J&K on January 21, 2023.

On February 3, the State Investigation Agency (SIA) carried out raids at Parimpora, Jawahar Nagar, Natipora, Chhanapora, Bulbul Bagh and Qamarwari areas of Srinagar District in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) pertaining to financial networks of terror outfits operating in J&K, reports Daily Excelsior. Incriminating material including laptop, mobile phones, bank documents, cash worth INR 1,00,000 have been recovered. Apart from Indian currency, the SIA also recovered 550 USD, 8000 UAE Dirham, 10 Saudi Riyals, and 1,96,730 Thai Baht during the raids.

The landmine went off when a group of soldiers were patrolling a forward area in the Kerni sector in the morning. The injured soldier, Lance Naik Anshul Rawat, was immediately given medical aid and was later airlifted to the Command Hospital in Udhampur for specialised treatment.

On February 8, Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai stated in the Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Indian Parliament) that “a total of 187 terrorists were killed and 111 counter-terror operations were carried out in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) in 2022”, reports Daily Excelsior. He further added that a total of 25 security personnel including two from Jammu District, one each in 2019 and 2022, two in Rajouri District in 2020, five in 2021 and four in 2022, nine in Poonch District in 2021, one in Ramban District in 2019, one in Kishtwar District in 2020 and one in Doda District in 2020 were killed in militant attacks post August 5, 2019. Sharing year-wise data on terror related incidents, the minister said 228 cases were reported in 2018, 153 in 2019, 126 in 2020, 129 in 2021 and 125 in 2022. “As many as 257 terrorists were killed in 2018, 157 in 2019, 221 in 2020, 180 in 2021 and 187 last year,” he said. Meanwhile, the minister also informed that the government had decided to pay INR 4,500 every month to the heads or the coordinators of the Village Defence Groups (VDGs), set up in the more vulnerable areas of J&K, and INR 4,000 to each member of the VDGs. “At present, the sanctioned strength of the members of the VDGs is 4,985, who are a part of 4,153 VDGs,” Rai told the Rajya Sabha. The Minister further added that the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) had imparted necessary training to 948 VDG members in collaboration with the District Police of Rajouri from January 6 to January 25,2023. Regarding narcotics related incidents, the Minister stated that the number of cases of drug smuggling registered in J&K in the last five years include 743 in 2017, 680 in 2018, 918 in 2019, 933 in 2020 and 1324 in 2021, adding that there is no data or study to indicate an increase in smuggling and consumption of narcotics or drugs in J&K in the last five years.

He added that "a total of 19 terrorists were involved in the 2019 Pulwama attack, of which eight terrorists were neutralised, seven jailed, and four terrorists are hiding in Pakistan", Daily excelsior added. "Presently, seven to eight local JeM terrorists and five to eight Pakistanis are operating in Kashmir," he stated. Moosa Sulaimani, a wanted JeM terrorist based in Kulgam, is one of them. "We are after him, and he will be neutralised soon," he claimed.
