Following recommendations by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the Union Government instructed service providers on May 1 to ban 14 applications in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), which have been used by terrorist organizations in the region, reports Daily Excelsior. These apps were used by militants in Kashmir to communicate with their supporters and Over Ground Workers (OGW). “Agencies keep track of channels used by OGWs and militants to communicate among themselves. While tracking down one of the communication, agencies found that the mobile application does not have representatives in India and it is difficult to track down activities happening on the app,” said an official. The banned apps include Crypviser, Enigma, Safeswiss, Wickrme, Mediafire, Briar, BChat, Nandbox, Conion, IMO, Element, Second line, Zangi, and Threema.

On May 5, five soldiers of Indian Army’s Special Forces were killed and an officer was injured (name not stated) when militants triggered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast with remote control at Kesari Hills forests in Kandi area in Rajouri District of Jammu and Kashmir, reports Daily Excelsior. The incident occurred during a combing operation by the Security Forces (SFs) against the April 20, 2023 Poonch attack perpetrators, who killed five soldiers in an ambush. “It was a very specific input about presence of the militants but unfortunately, they were trapped in the IED blast,” officials stated. Officials are investigating whether the militants intentionally revealed their locations by turning on their satellite phone and laid an IED to ambush the army personnel during the operation. The People’s Anti-Fascist Front (PAFF), an offshoot of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terror group, claimed responsibility for the killings.

Pakistan's Foreign Minister (FM) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that India's decision to reorganize Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) in August 2019 has made it “difficult” for those in Pakistan who advocated engagement in the past, adding that the restoration of statehood to the Union Territory (UT) could be “one step”, reports The Hindu on May 6. Bhutto has requested that the Indian government creates an environment conducive to talks, and that as soon as the status quo of August 4, 2019, is restored, the two countries could engage in a meaningful dialogue. He also denied that there were any back-channel talks ongoing between India and Pakistan at present, although he conceded that these had been “productive” in the past. He added further that he condemns all terrorist acts “from India to the US”, and that no Indian official had blamed Pakistan for the attack in Poonch on April 20, 2023.
