Five rebels were also reported to be killed in these operations. In the first incident, 22 police personnel including two officers were killed and two others injured at Bichaur village of Lamjung district. Three rebels were also killed in the encounter. In the second incident in Nuwakot district, ten personnel were killed and two others were injured. Two rebels were killed in this attack. In the third attack at Bametaskar in Gulmi district, eight police personnel and a civilian were killed.

Meanwhile, at a meeting in Kathmandu, on July 16, some former Army generals demanded that the government should first declare the Maoist as "terrorists." "The security forces are prepared to initiate action unless the terrorists are serious about safely releasing the abducted security personnel and looted arms," said a Home Ministry statement issued today. The security forces were consolidating their positions around the Maoist hideouts, the release further said. Other reports, meanwhile, held that either the Maoist insurgents moved out to safety or have gained an upper hand. Army sources, however, denied both the possibilities.

It was in response to an appeal made by Prime Minister-elect Sher Bahadur Deuba to stop all kinds of violent activities. The chairman of the Maoists, ‘Comrade Prachanda’ issued a statement announcing the cease-fire, which is meant to create an atmosphere for talks with the government. In his statement, Prachanda said that he has already instructed his cadres to temporarily halt offensives. Separately, Prime Minister Deuba, in a statement, said he had instructed police not to carry out any offensive activities against the Maoist workers.
